Julie, I don't know how you manage to go through so many films without going crazy! *grin* I'm 99% certain "1841 - 7th Feb - William Monroe to Catherine Pena_eqtt" in # 066, 067 is Catherine Peniwitt (Penewitt) which would be interesting, because I have Catherine marrying James, with their son named William, but the book I've gotten that from has been wrong in the past. Could I have a copy of this one please? As always, many thanks for your hard work. -Ken ken@yankdownunder.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Julie" <juls92627@yahoo.com> To: <vawarren-L@rootsweb.com>; "VA_Augusta" <VAAUGUST@rootsweb.com>; "VA_Clarke" <VACLARKE@rootsweb.com>; "VA_Page" <VAPAGE@rootsweb.com>; "VA_Rock" <VAROCKIN@rootsweb.com>; "VA_Shen" <SHENANDOAH@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, August 17, 2007 8:51 AM Subject: [SHENANDOAH] Shen county minister's returns - 1841-45 Okay - here we go :) LDS film number 2167844 = Shenandoah County Minister's Returns, 1772-1877 please ask for the scans - I left off the details for faster transcription and so you will ask for the scan :-) Please correct my transcription errors, lol and feel free for share, forward, etc. Augusta - did you notice - you had one last round?? You will find that information in the death register for Rockbridge Co. 1853-1870. This book is located in the clerk's office at the Rockbridge Co. courthouse. The same information appears in a book compiled by Angela Ruley in 1991. The book is entitled Rockbridge County, Va death register 1853-1870 death register 1912-1917. This book is no longer in print. The information is on page 77 and the child's name is Henry M. Does anyone know of or have access to records that might help me verify the source of this record? I am also trying to verify the child's correct first name. Most likely this child died in Rockbridge County, slight possibility that is was Augusta County. Child named Harvey or Henry died August 13, 1858 "died of Gravel, at age 11 yr, 6 mo, s/o Henry V & R. Sly, born in Rockbridge Co., Father was a farmer, Henry V. Sly reported the death" Thank you, Sharon Moffitt Cowen
William TANKERSLEY b. 1811, Rockbridge Co, VA m. Susan STAUNTON/STANTON b. 1816 in VA. They were in Rockingham County VA before the birth of their first child. They were Union supporters and abolitionists and lost all in the burning of the Shenandoah Valley in 1864 and moved to Clinton County, Indiana. Susan's parents were supposedly Clifford and Susan STAUNTON/STANTON. I am especially looking for: Information on this STAUNTON/STANTON family. I have been unable to make any connection. They may possibly have been from Rockbridge or Augusta counties Marriage date for William and Susan and location Thank you, Sharon Moffitt Cowen
It soumds that way to me too. I didn't have much info on Michael, Jr so I was excited to see your note plus a comment that his Will mentioned a daughter Ann. Ann had a brother John (that's the only family member name I have for sure) and I think there is a John in Michael, Jr's Will but I don't have papers in front of me right now. I am wondering about the Cumberland Co. PA information matching information from Albemarle Co. The Albemarle Woods family left PA almost 50 years prior to the marriage of Mary Ann to Andrew Sharp. I have not seen anything that would suggest that Michael Woods Jr returned to PA at any time in order for his daughter to marry there. My immediate thought is that records for 2 different Woods families have been intermixed. If I may jump in on this discussion about the Woods family. My 5G grandmother, Mary "Ann" Woods was born in 1756 or 1757 according to her gravestone (which I saw) and the "History of Armstrong County PA page 559. I found a birth date of 9 Dec 1757 in Drummondville, Midlothian Co, Scot on the IGI but don't have any proof that it was her birth. She used the name Ann in the docs I have located about her including tax lists, census and her will. She married Andrew Sharp in April 1783 in Cumberland Co PA according to a letter written by her daughter in which she described her father Andrew's death by Indians as they floated down the river on a houseboat. I found Andrew and 3 of his siblings' baptism records on film from Cambelltown, Co Argyl Scotland. Some county histories mistakenly say he was born in PA. Handwritten motes on the families held by the Indiana Co Hist & Gen Soc list the following 3 names which appear to be alternate father & grdfa of Mary Ann. "Ann Woods (1757/1809) m Capt Andrew Sharp; Michael Woods Jr (1708/1777) m Ann Lambert; Michael Woods, Sr (1684/1962?? did he mean 1762?) m Mary Campbell Also lists Mary Campbell as d 1762." Writer did not leave any documentation. I know she had a brother, John, as his will in 1812 names her but I haven't seen the will myself. Ann's Will Dated 9-15-1808 Proven 6-27-1809: Children: Hannah Leason, Agnes Ralston, THOMAS, Margaret, Joseph, Ann. Brother John Woods (bequest fr his estate); Exec: Thomas Sharp, Son Joseph Sharp; Wit Benj Walker, John Walker "late Armstrong Twp p 12 #15" ("Index to Indiana Co Wills Bk #1, p12, Wills probated 1807-1850) There is a John Woods 1790 C Northumberland Co: M 1(16+); F 5. Is this her brother?? Will for James Sharp (brother of my Andrew) 1812 names a David H Woods & a John Woods as Witnesses, Cumberland Co PA Please note that I have the date of 1812 also for the Will of Ann Sharp's brother John Woods. "Hist of Cumberland & Adams Cos PA" 1886 lists a Samuel Woods, Wm Woods Jr, & a David W. McCullough as mbrs of a Presby congregation at Walnut Bottom in Penn Twp Cumberland Co in 1834 aka the Dickinson Church. (p 334-335) It also mentions a tract in West Pennsborough Twp which was taken out by Richard & John Woods in 1786 & sld the same yr to Landis & Bowman. A mill already existed on the land & some of the land eventually was owned by Alters. In 1789 it was referred to as "the Landis mill, formerly Woods". This was later replaced by a mill blt by Wm Alter in 1832. The Alter mill was also a local trading-post, saaw-mill, clover-mill, & a whiskey distillery. (p 362-3) (Landis and Alter are also my family names in PA.) I found the following on the Wood/Woods Exchange on Wills has Michael Woods Jr, Botetourt Co VA, dated 29 May 1776, recd 11 Mar 1777, wife Ann Woods, sons Saml, Wm & David. Daus Jane Buster, Susannah Cowan, Elizabeth Shepherd, Magdelene Campbell, Martha Woods, Sarah Woods, 2 youngest daus, ANN & Margaret. Execs: son David Woods & friend John Bowyer. Wit: John Logan, George Daugherty, & Chas Lambert. ( Sub by Mary Kinney <marylkinney@webtv.net> on GenForum Surname Woods site Note #1724 on 3 Dec 1999) I would appreciate any comments, corrections, etc. Nancy Stephenson in So Calif. nguenther@cox.net ----- > -----Original Message----- > From: vaaugust-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:vaaugust-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Sue Liedtke > Sent: Tuesday, August 21, 2007 6:44 PM > To: vaaugust@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [VAAUGUST] Woods Family > > Michael Woods was the patriarch of this family. Hello, Does anyone know of a Jesse Wood(s) who married Nancy Puckett Sept. 19, 1819 in Nelson Co. VA and died ca. 1842? Once of their sons James Wood(s) later moved through Rockingham Co., Floyd Co, before settling in Giles Co. He married Minerva Aliff in 1858. Richard Woods came to Albemarle County, VA which adjoins Augusta and is on the eastern slope of the mountain, 1700's. He is said to have migrated from pennsylvania down the Valley and across the mountain at "Woods Gap". I have some information on him, but if this is the family you are seeking I will get a Woods descendent to contact you. Great story about General Jackson crossing the mountain west to east after a great victory at Cross keys and Port Republic. It is said he wanted the union to think he was headed to Richmond to help Lee. Instead he turned at Michums River, just west of Charlottesville, goton the train and pursued his Valley Campaign, which George Rommel later studied, about 1937, with considerable success. Anyhow, before turning at Mechjums on the train (cars, they called them then) he is reported to have stayed at Michael woods tavern. Doubtful, but a great story. So michael Woods asked him where he was going. Jackson is said to have repled with a question: Can you keep a secret?" To which Woods assented. Then Jackson said "so can I". You see, Jackson hared his plans for the next days battle with his staff at Kernstown, and met defeat. After that he never shared his plans with anyone, not even Lee. But Lee had such confidence in him that sharing was not needed. In 1820 there were more Wood and Woods people in Albemarle county, VA than any other name. I am sitting here at the bottom of the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountain looking up at Woods Old Gap. If you want a contact expert on these Woods send me your address and I will forward it on after I locate one agreeable.. Daley Craig <daleycraig@cs.com>

Julie, I have a feeling that the Windle is my line. Windle, Wendel, Vandal, Vandale. All of these spellings appear in my Vandale line. Abraham Vandal came from New York right after the revolutionary war to VA. It is mentioned that he had cousins there. A new mystery to check out. Also the Lentz, Lantz, Lance is connected to my children's father. You did good, girl! Thanks, Mary Jane ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
