    1. [VAAUGUST-L] Re: schaffer Surname
    2. John Hamilton
    3. Sue I have a George Frederick Schaeffer, born in County of Hesse, Germany. He served in the French and Indian War and arrived in Philadelphia, PA on August 27th, 1739 aboard the ship "Snow Betsy". This Schaeffer line extents to Martha Margaret Schaffer (b 1814 - d 1907) in Washington Co. Virginia. Between Martha and George were: John Sr(1755-1847), George(1781-1874), and Henry(1813-1899). -----Original Message----- From: Sue Koller <sue@kaiconsulting.com> To: VAAUGUST-L@rootsweb.com <VAAUGUST-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, January 03, 1999 11:58 Subject: RE: [VAAUGUST-L] 1999 Surname list!! >Hi to all > >I'm hoping someone is out there who recognizes my names and wants to share >information. 2. Robert W. Thompson
    3. My Augusta County surnames are THOMPSON and GIBSON. There are indications that Joseph Thompson married Mary Gibson in Augusta County, owned land there from 1773 to 1787, removed to Fayette County Kentucky. I know nothing of the parents of either Joseph or Mary but I am trying to connect them to families in Augusta. Other Virginia surnames are LITTLER and ROSS, leaders of the Quaker migration to Frederick County and SCOTT in Washington County. Do any of the list members have a stray Joseph Thompson that dissapeared about 1787 or so? Bob Thompson Prior Lake, MN

George was born in England around 1700 and died in Augusta County in 1745. Elizabeth may have been born in Augusta County and left after George died to move to North Carolina, possibly with her new husband Mr. Patton. George and Elizabeth's children were Sarah, Pli(y)er, George Jr., John and William. John and William both appear in land records in NC by 1796, near Anson County. Chances are they migrated to Wilkes County NC with their mother and step-father since they were only in the early teens when George died. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I am searching for an elusive Josephine, born in VA about 1840 according to the 1880 Frederick County Maryland Census. She was married August 24 1870 in Frederick County Maryland to Columbus America Zimmerman of Frederick County Maryland. This was her second marriage, as the 1870 marriage license describes her as Josephine Bishop, widow. This leads me to assume that Bishop is not her maiden name. Cemetery records (she died January 17 1917 and was buried at Mt Olivet Cemetry Frederick Co Maryland)indicate that her mother's maiden name may have been Martz. Could this be the same Josephine you are seeking?
