Hi! If all else fails & you aren't able to get the info you need anywhere else, the Library of Congress has a very comprehensive listing of the history of the companies & units - dates formed, commanders, batgtles in which they were engaged etc. Of course, they do no research - but you might be able to get the names & authors of a volume or volumes that you could order on interlibrary loan from another library. HiYa Augusta County Listers! I just received a query from Julie in Fort Worth, Texas about General Rosser's Brigade attackin a federal depot in Beverly WV on January 11th, 1865. Is there someone who'd know which units participated, in this raid on Beverly WV? My source states there were only two 'slim brigades' stationed in the Staunton area in January 1865. ============================================================ ============================================================ I read with great interest you entry on Rosser's forage into WV. Were these the 35th Cavalry, the 'White Comanches' that he lead? You didn't state a unit and I was wondering. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Julia Shiflett Crosswell jcross@metronet.com Fort Worth, TX
Does anyone want information on John Baer/Bear, Sr. and Elizabeth Miller and any of their descendants?? If you would like I can send them privately or post some to the list...if it would be of interest to list. Also, in the referenced message, are you saying that this Elizabeth Miller was the d/o Martin Miller??? I wanted you all to see this. Waynesboro should have a plaque up somewhere for this ship and the man it was named for. The ship no longer exists but it stayed afloat for a long, long time. Here's the URL: http://metalab.unc.edu/hyperwar/USN/ships/DE/DE-331_Koiner.html Thanks, Lynn, I had found this but not the man. Anybody in the area know these people? Norma
I found this while researching today and felt it was way too impt. not to share. The names included in it are very familiar to most of us. Maybe this will help someone find that WBTS ancestor that has been missing!! During the Civil War period, he had a long list of those killed in battle, as cataloged by a Charles Herbst who published a list. It does not list the counties from which these KY soldiers came, but maybe it will be worth the typing to list them here. Mr. Herbst, a Confederate soldier out of Capt Aston MADEIRA's Co from Covington, KY visited each grave and marked them. The queries are taken care of by Mike Gwinn and are on a different set of pages. However, there is a search engine just for queries. Mike will also see this notice and take care of your query deletion. Carmen Finley At 06:45 PM 1/10/99 -0800, you wrote: >Dear Ms. Finley, > >I asked the search engine to look for the name Markle. Does anybody know the maiden names (with a source, please) of any of the following people found in the 1860 Bath census? The dates following the names are my guesses at their approximate marriage years, based on the age of the eldest child in the 1850 or 1860 census; each couple most likely married in or before the listed year, but their marriage is not recorded in Bath co. Burket Jones & Mary - 1834 Sylvester Robinson & Maria - 1841 - not in Augusta Co Marriages; try Shenandoah John Swats/Swarts & Nancy W. - before 1860; not in Augusta Co Marriages William Bulger & Nancy - 1848; not in Augusta Co Marriages Robert Glendy & Mary - 1840; not in Augusta Co Marriages James McMullen & Sarah - 1840 William Smith & Elsy/Alsy/Alice - 1827 Charles Hughart & Isabella - 1847 David Withrow & Elizabeth - 1827 Adam Linkswiler/Linchwiller & Jenny/Jean - 1824 George Linkswiler/Linchwiller & Sarah - 1852 Randolph R. Wilson & Susan - 1847 William Deeds/Deids & Rachel - 1835 - try Alleghany co Albert Jordan & Sarah - 1837 - try Albemarle/Fluvanna Thanks much for any help or even hints. My previous offer applies here: lookups in the 1850 and 1860 census in return for any help, and a free annotated 1860 census book (when it's published) for 5 or more maiden names with sources. --Holly Cochran
Hi all, I am currently working on annotating the 1860 Bath co census with maiden names of married and widowed women. You might be interested (and somewhat discouraged, as I was) to note that, out of 461 families (granted, some of these were single men), I found only 126 marriages listed in "Bath County Marriages and Minister's Returns" by Metheny & Wise. In other words, only about 27% of the households had recorded marriages. (Some of this is accounted for by the fact that this book stops in 1853, so marriages between 1853 and 1860 were not included in my lookup pool.) Then I moved on to other sources - Will Books 1 through 6, the Bicentennial History, Early Western Augusta Pioneers, Pocahontas County Marriages, Vital Records of Highland County. With this additional information, I was able to document marriages for approximately 50% of the households. I still have to check Augusta Co Marriages and Rockbridge Co Marriages for a few households that I suspect married in those counties. Some percentage of these Bath couples probably married in surrounding counties: Alleghany, Augusta, Shenandoah, Pendleton, Highland, Greenbrier, Rockbridge. I'm not even trying to annotate marriages that happened in other countries (England, Germany, Ireland) before the immigrants came to Bath Co. I'd like to solicit your help with some of the marriages I'm stuck on. Some of you probably have family bibles, later marriage records, or other sources for some of these marriages, and I'm hoping you'll share! Even if you just recognize a family name and can tell me which counties I should look in for a marriage, that would be helpful! Does anybody know the maiden names (with a source, please) of any of the following people found in the 1860 Bath census? The dates following the names are my guesses at their approximate marriage years, based on the age of the eldest child in the 1850 or 1860 census; each couple most likely married in or before the listed year. I will meter out these names in small batches so as not to overwhelm everybody. George Brill & Margaret - 1852 John Knighton & Harriet - 1859/60 Joseph & Margaret Morris - 1852 Dr. Andrew Wilson & Mary J. - 1853 (I suspect she's Adam Porter's dau.) Wesley Mines & Betsy - 1859 Joel Armintrout & Elizabeth - 1850 to 1860 William Randolph & Betsy - 1856 George H. Thomas & Elizabeth - 1859 David Liptrap & Mary - 1860 Zerobabel Ailstock & Martha - 1855 Roger Mason & Hannah - 1848 James Ray/Rhea & Matilda - 1852 A.A. (Absalom?) Ailstock & Mary J. - 1859 James Wood(s) & Mary J. - 1851; not in Augusta Co Marriages John Anthony & Clara/Filia/Tilia - before 1840 or a 2nd marriage between 1850 and 1860 (Clara is listed in the 1850 census; Filia/Tilia is in the 1860); not in Augusta Co Marriages Marriages mentioned in the Bicentennial or another source, but need confirming marriage record: John McClung & Ellen McDonald/McDannald <1860 Addison McClung & Martha Lang - 1854 William Sitlington & Jane Ann Walker - 1860 Samuel McClung & Matilda Rodecap - 1838, maybe Rockbridge co Otho Williams Jr. & Margaret Beatty - 1852, maybe Rockbridge co John Rolston/Ralston & Jane (Smith?) - between 1850 & 1860 Please help me if you can. I want this book to have as many maiden names as possible, for every reader's sake. I'd be happy to return the favor with lookups in the 1850 or 1860 census, and for significant contributions (let's say 5 or more names), a free copy of the book when it's published.
