    2. The following query was posted to the Augusta County Query Page on Wed Jan 27 12:49:43 1999 PLEASE ADRRESS YOUR REPLY TO: RPrice9207.aol.com (Robert J. Price) I am asking for information with regard to my g-g-g-grandfather, Cullum Price, born approx 1765 in Va. Married to Betsy (maiden name, marriage date unknown). Cullum was in western N.C./eastern Tenn. at least transiently, where one of sons was born in 1798 (Adam Price). They subsequently migrated to Ky. prob. through the Cumberland Gap and were known to be living in Clay Co, Ky. in 1818. In searching through some records I found the following: "Records of Augusta Co., Va. Vol ii 1745-1800. P455 Augusta Co. Parish Vestry Book pg.429 "Processioners appointed viz Cullum Price from Mr. Jones to the Picket Mountain and as low as the county line on both sides of the river to north of South River". The Cullum mentioned here seems to be too old for my relative, but he might have been related. If anyone has any information that they might contribute, I would be deeply appreciative. You may contact me at RPrice9207.aol.com PLEASE ADRRESS YOUR REPLY TO: RPrice9207.aol.com (Robert J. Price)

    2. The following query was posted to the Augusta County Query Page on Wed Jan 27 09:41:35 1999 PLEASE ADRRESS YOUR REPLY TO: cloudhoper@aol.com (Earl F. Kisling ) Am interested in learning more about the whereabouts of Christoph KIEßlING/KISSLING after he left the ship Neptune in Philadelphia in Oct., 1752, until we find him near Ursulasburg (McGaheysville), Augusta Co., VA, about 1757. He appears to have remarried in 1757 in Augusta Co., VA, but we do not know what happened to his first wife, Anna Gertrude (nee KAUTZ) and their child Eve Elizabeth KIEßLING. Anna Christina LINGLE was his second wife, a neighbor woman who also lived, as Christoph did, on Lick Run, near Ursulasburg, VA. Christoph and Christina (nee LINGLE) KISSLING were my 4th G grandparents. PLEASE ADRRESS YOUR REPLY TO: cloudhoper@aol.com (Earl F. Kisling )

    2. The following query was posted to the Augusta County Query Page on Wed Jan 27 09:20:51 1999 PLEASE ADRRESS YOUR REPLY TO: cloudhoper@aol.com (Earl F. Kisling) KAUTZ, Christian and wife may have come to VA, to near Ursulasburg (now McGaheysville), to live with their son, John Kautz, or with their daughter, Anna Gertrude (nee Kautz) Kissling/Kießling, the wife of Christoph Kießling/Kissling, a cloth dyer. There is uncertainty what happened to Christian Kautz and his wife after the family came to PA from Hesse in 1752. Any comments from people with Kautz interests? 3. I don't think that quite fits, Lee. They could always jump in the ocean and take a bath - and they probably got bathed regularly by rain storms. The gist of this thread is a habitual lack of water in Europe promoted liquor and made it an important staple in their diet. Norma "G. Lee Hearl" wrote: > > I do not wish to belabor a point, however, If I remember correctly, in > colonial times the ships coming to America sailed to the Island of Barbados > and made a stop to take on fresh water..before continuing the journey..Am I > to believe they took on water so everyone on board could take a bath and be > looking their "best" even tho they were drunk from drinking wine for two or > three months??? > G. 3. This is fascinating, Neil. I have been aware of this in the past but have not read these books. I think I've said before on this list, that just because a family had a still on their property, handed down in a will, didn't mean that family was necessarily in the liquor business, everybody had a still, just like everybody had a smoke house. This was a necessary part of their lives. This is why Europeans fed their children wine, because they didn't have water. However, in VA natural springs are as abundant as rocks, and it boggles the mind to think they didn't have water here. There are references to drunkeness all through Chalkleys - they were fined for it, put in the stocks, kept from holding office, kept from preaching, etc. We now know some people just can't cope with liquor - I can't! Half a glass of wine puts me on my ear and gives me a hangover, so at social occasions I drink ice water and feel completely left out, but there are less drinkers these days. Honest, my body just can't cope with it. And from the number of alcoholics in my family, past and present, I think it runs in the family. I also believe the Native Americans have a body makeup that can't cope with it. Considering, our ancestors in Europe had drunk liquor for hundreds of years (thousands) and had become accustomed to it, it makes sense the Indians wouldn't be able to cope with it, since they hadn't learned to handle it. However, they did use hallucinogenins for many of their spiritual ceremonies since cave man days, according to Jane Auer. Very interesting history, don't you think? 3. Snockered ? Inebriated, binge, tear, jag, soaked, wine-bibber, sot, tipple, cry in your beer, in his cups, soused, three sheets to the wind, etc. and then there's moonshine, hootch, booze, hair of the dog, bathtub gin, little brown jug, applejack, corn liquor, hard cider, etc. Just to mention a few of the older ones, many from our hardy German pioneers. 1. [VAAUGUST-L] Debate of the Liquids
    2. I just wanted to write a note to cite a book a little older than the rest of these....doesn't the Bible state all through it about the women, etc., going to the well for drinking water??!! There is no way that I would ever believe that a lush, green, clean country such as Ireland wouldn't have had some fresh water. I would also imagine that it was harder to find around London with the contamination but I cannot believe that all/ or most of the water in Europe was bad. I have heard Europeans that come here talk about not drinking our water and will only drink their bottles of water...we have bad water .....i.e. chemicals, toxins... That is one big thing that our ancestors didn't have to deal with and that is all of these horrible toxins put into our streams. Surely, though, I can trust that the Bible was correct in talking about the cool, clean water... Though, too, I would imagine if people had a choice of drinking plain water-clean or not-or drinking some type of stimulant or go-go juice, they would choose the later. 1. [VAAUGUST-L] Researching Beverly Manor
    2. John B. Lisle
    3. I am new to doing research in Augusta Co. and would appreciate some advice as to resources available and where to find them. I have ancestors who were settlers in Beverly Manor starting in the late 1730s. I am looking to find records of land transactions and any wills, marriage records, baptismal records that might exist. In particular, the principal family that I am researching are Davidsons (or Davisons). In 1738, John Davison recorded a 785 acre plot. and in 1739 a Samuel Davison recorded a 353 acre plot. Where might I get a copy of these deeds? Where can I find an index of other land transactions, these or other Davisons or Davidsons may have made. John Davison died in 1749/50. He supposedly died in what was then Anson Co., but now Iredell Co., NC. But he still had land in Augusta. Is there an index to Wills? His might be in Virginia. Several of the children of both Davisons were baptised at Tinkling Spring by Rev. John Craig. Where are his records? Thank you, john. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= John B. Lisle <jbl@tqsi.com> P.O. Box 602, Lexington, MA 02420 Phone: 781-270-1006 Fax: 781-270-1174

    3. Many of you know of the extensive work Katherine Bushman did during the period 1961-1997 researching families in the Shenandoah Valley and especially in Augusta County. Her papers, some 43.325 cu. ft., have been put in the hands of the Library of Virginia. You can view their listing of her work at: http://eagle.vsla.edu/cgi-bin/bible.gateway?authority=0087-68980 I am not sure exactly how one goes about requesting something from the library, but if someone finds out before I do, please let me know. I have added this link to local resources, both under Augusta County families and under Archives/Manuscripts. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Carmen J.
