    2. The following query was posted to the Augusta County Query Page on Wed Feb 17 19:02:44 1999 PLEASE ADRRESS YOUR REPLY TO: Craig.Ayler@worldnet.att.net (Craig Ayler) My ggg grandfather, Andrew W. Ailer was born in Virginia in 1800. According to the census records his parents were of foreign birth. In the late 1820's he traveled to southern Ohio, specifically Hocking co. & then married Hannah Legg in Ross co. in 1829. They had a son the following year on April 8, 1830. Their son's name was Augustus Harper Ailer. I am trying to find Andrew's parents. Does anyone have a clue. We believe his parents resided in Augustus co. I have located in book; Augusta County Marriages, 1748- 1850 that shows an Ailer that married Apr. 22, 1791. Their names were George Ailer & Mary Tanner. Does this information help. I would be interested in hearing from someone. It is my hope to 1) find these people. & 2) locate the ships records of their immagration. 1. [VAAUGUST-L] The Ailer Clan
    2. Craig Ayler
    3. I'm looking for any information that might lead me to my gggg grandparents. Andrew W. Ailer traveled to southern Ohio (Hocking co., then to Ross co.) in the late 1820's. There, in 1829, he married Hannah Legg. These people are my ggg grandparents. According to the US Census records Andrew was born in VA in 1800 (presumably in Augustus County) and his parents were of foreign birth. I recently came across a marrage record (Augustus County Marriages, 1748-1850 by Vogt & Kethley) that lists a George Ailer & Mary Tanner married Apr. 22, 1791. Can any one link these people to Andrew? Does anyone have any suggestions? Your help will be greatly appreciated. Craig Ayler [ Craig.Ayler@worldnet.att.net ]

    1. [VAAUGUST-L] Best Kept Secret In The Valley
    2. Monday I had one of those great experiences that only genealogy can bring. I traveled to Rockingham Co. to do some cemetery snooping. On the way I decided to stop by Bridgewater College and personally thank Terry Barkley the archivist at the Alexander Mack Library for some work he had done for me. I had not met Terry personally but we had e-mailed a few times. He turned out to be the most accommodating and friendly person that one can emagine. He personally showed me the Special Collections section of the Library and kept me supplied all morning long with genealogically related books on my family. The Special Collections section at Bridgewater College is much larger than the collection at the Rockingham Harrisonburg Historical Soceity and it's electronically indexed! They have a website which you can use to get to the electronic card index and also it will link you to the library at James Madison Univ. and the Univ. of Virginia. In the afternoon Terry serves as the Curator for the Reuel B. Pritchett Museum on campus in the basement of Cole Hall (every building on campus is only a five minute walk from the library). Going through the museum is a nice little break after you've been pouring over family histories for four hours. I can only tell you that going to the Library at Bridgewater College needs to be a "must" on your list of things to do when you're in the Valley. The exposure to the friendliness and generosity of Mountain Valley people was a rewarding experience. I definitely plan to go back. By the way, I never got to the cemetery. Here's their website. <A HREF="http://www.bridgewater.edu/departments/library/library.html">Alexande r Mack Memorial Library Home Page</A> Sincerely Tracy Hunter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My HUNTER family http://members.aol.com/th3978/index.html In Augusta Co., Va - HUNTER, GOOD, BOYERS, LANDES, LOWMAN, BAKER, RIMEL In Rockingham Co., Va - HUNTER, SITES, SMITH, BOWMAN ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    3. Many counties, who are listed at Rootsweb, have mail lists. You can always check by going to Rootweb at: www.Rootsweb.com and then to Mail Lists. Or more directly: http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/us/index.html Louisa does have a list: VALOUISA-L -- A mailing list for anyone with a genealogical interest in Louisa County, Virginia. Interested individuals may want to check out the Louisa County VAGenWeb page at http://www.trevilians.com/. VALOUISA-D -- digest mode It's easy -- just click on the list you want. When the "mail-to" window pops up, write just the single word "subscribe" in the body of the message. That's all. Not sure that will work from this message since I cut and paste the above. If not, go to Rootsweb. 1. [VAAUGUST-L] Augusta Co Robinsons
    2. John and Barbara Ekiss
    3. Nancy, I'm confused as to just which man/family you are looking for, but these Robinson's are so confusing anyway,,,keep me awake nights sometimes. Anyway, I think one key is to remember where they live,,,the 'waters'. I have found these things on some of the names you mentioned. Just which one are you interest in? Kegley pg 334 has this to say abt Geo. Robinson...that he d. spring 1763,20 years leader in community., land in Beverley Manor, in the Forks of James, on the Roanoke and on the branches of the New River. As a brother in law to Bryan McDonald and Wm. Graham who came with him to the Roanoke he looked out for their interests in land and had them and others of his family to settle near by him. His own location - on the forks of the ways leading to the South and the West, on a creek strong enough to run a grist mill and on soil good enough for profitable farming. ....Capt of the Company until large enough to divide etc etc. Buried in the graveyard by his dwelling. His wife, Martha, and eldest sons James and Samuel should have the profits from the mill and the plantation to maintain, clothe and school the younger children. George and Wm. were to learn trades when old enough. If wife mar. again, she was to have 1/3 of profits of the mill and 1/3 of the plantation laid off. James and Sam were to have the home place with adjoining entries and pay Geo. and Wm. 40 pounds when they were 21. Dau. Sarah, Catherine, Priscilla and Martha were to receive 20 pounds each. Widow mar. Joshua McCormick and went to KY. James and Samuel with their wives Sarah and Jane sold the homeplace in 1770 to Thomas Madison, who succeeded in getting the Vestry of Botetourt Parish to use it with adjoining land for a Glebe. HIs will witnessed by Wm. Preston, Wm. Graham, Joseph Robinson, John Robinson and Francis Graham. Then Kegley has - there was James Robinson Jr. who left a will 1751, recorded 1754, his land on Lewis creek in Beverley Manor adjoining land of Rev. John Craig and others. He had sons George and Alexander. Not much known abt this George except that he live in Botetourt Co, Alexander lived in Montgomery Co. Alex. mar. Margaret Robinson. They sold their 1/2 of James land to George in 1777 and in 1779 went to KY. George's wife was Jane. In the Boggs Family Book it says that William Robinson's dau. Margaret mar. Alexander Robertson. And that Wm. had a sister Margaret who mar. Robert Boggs Kegley pg 335 Wm. Robinson, of South Branch, built a causeway at Vause's and died Aug 1765, estate appraised by Walter Crockett, Wm Bryan and James Neely. Then there is the Col. Wm. Robinson living on the North Fork Calendar of Delaware Wills New Castle Co 1682-1800 James Robinson, yeoman will written 4 Dec 1726, probated 30 Dec 1726. Son George; dau. Cathren MackDonald,; dau. Ann Hollingsworth, wife Cathren; children James, Thomas, Wm., Joseph, Johm, Priscilla, Daniel and boy Robinson; borthers George and Joseph Keep me in the loop of communication on all these please. I wrote to the Clerk of the District Court for Augusta Co. in Staunton; they said they don't have probate records. They suggested I write Waynesboro Circuit Court; Waynesboro's probate records start in 1948. Do you have any suggestion as to where else I might write? Thank you for your help. 2. G. Lee, It could be an interesting subject to get into....compared to squirrel dumplings!!!<G> Being of Southern Heritage---as I know you are!! I relate some of our ancestors leanings toward their loyalty to the "Mother" Country as I do some of their later descendants to the North. I was informed a few months ago that I was the direct descendants of some VA Tories through one branch of my tree---my BANE family!! My gr.gr.gr.grandmother...the Tory descendant, md. into the family of Amer. Rev., Militia and Frontier Veterans. She, ( and through her, me.....) is the descendant of Robert the Bruce of Scotland!! History has pushed them into a shadowy corner and I would love to learn more about these ancestors!!!
