Carmen thanks for making us aware of all the goodies on Augusta and VA sites. I'm in AZ, visited VA once many years ago, but not into genealogy then. I appreciated today being able to view some of the places ancestors lived oh so long ago. Barb
Berkley, Jefferson and Morgan Counties of W.VA. were formed from Frederick County. The rest of W.VA. came from Augusta County.. G. Lee Hearl..

I am looking for the parents of Jane Adams. She was born Feb 1795. She married Tunis Quick, 29 Sep 1828. I found Jane Quick on an Augusta County Vital Record film listing her death on 17 Jan 1873. It listed her parents. but the film is very hard to read. It looks like Thomas and M. Adams. I am trying to lacte something that would prove it. Thank you, Jeff DeHart Other Augusta County names I am researching: HOUFF, ALLBRIGHT, HUSSEY
Rudolph Fry (1784-1868) married Mary Grove(s) (1789-1854). On the marriage bond of Rudolph Fry and Mary Grove in 1821, Benjamin Grove was surety, Benjamin Grove made mark. Rudolph lived all of his life in the Shanandoah Valley of Virginia near the town of Waynesboro, August Co., and was a shoemaker and farmer by trade. He is the first Fry of whom the family has definite data. It is known that he could speak the German language, and it is thought that he was a descendant of one of several brothers who settled in Pennsylvania. At least the term "Pennsylvania Dutch" hovers over the name. To Rudolph and Mary were born seven children. I am descended from the first born, John Fry, b. 7 May 1822, August Co. Other children were Cyrus F., Hannah C., James D., Elizabeth E., William (d.y.) and Sarah M.Fry, b. 3 Dec 1843, d. 1868, Keokuk, Co., Iowa, m. Samuel Hildebrand, who farmed near North English, Iowa. A daughter Kate Hildebrand m. H. Summit. Who were the parents of Rudolph Fry? Jewel McDaniel

Does anybody recognize this family from the 1860 Bath co. census? The surname might also be spelled Knafe, Naffe, Knave, Nave, Ness, Nepp, or something I have't even thought of! I'm hoping to find the wife's maiden name, with a source. June 08, 1860, p.19/247, Cleeks Mills PO George Neff 45 m laborer, P=100 Belinda 37 f Washington 24 m laborer Caroline 20 f Isabella 18 f Sarah A. 15 f Frank 6 m So far, I've been unable to locate George in the 1850 VA census for clues on where they might have married or lived before Bath, but there's a good chance they married in an adjacent county. Note that Belinda is probably a 2nd wife, married in the last 10 years or so, based on the children's ages. Can anyone help?? >> Judy, According to "Everton's Handybook for Genealogists." Augusta County was formed from Orange County, VA., in 1738. Then also in 1738, Frederick County, VA., wa formed from Orange and Augusta Counties. In 1753, Hanpshire County was formed from Frederick County, VA. When Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, fifty western counties united and petitioned Congress for re-admittance to the union. The state of West Viriginia was admitted to the Union in 1863. That is where Hampshire County is located now -- right across the state boundary from Frederick County. All the records may be in Hampshire County court house on Main Street, Romney, WV 26757-1696. Handybook says they have Probate records from 1780, and birth, death and marriage records from 1865. Was Augusta at any time called Hampshire County? Here's my problem. The will of William Kimsey (who, along with wife Elizabeth and brother Benjamin appear in Chalkley Abstracts) was made in 1778 in "Hampshire County\, in the colony of Virginia". It was also filed there. Problem is, I can't find any Hampshire County. I suspect it may be an old county that was renamed, but I can find no trace of it. Can anyone help?? Regards -- Judy Kimsey
Hi all, If you have not already discovered Virginia's historic photo collection (old photos of towns or regions, old homes, buildings, churches, schools, etc.), take a look at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/va/photo/index.htm If you have something you can add, so much the better. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Carmen J. The following query was posted to the Augusta County Query Page on Sat Mar 27 18:08:42 1999 PLEASE ADRRESS YOUR REPLY TO: jandk@se-tel.com (Karen "Cassity" Tackett) I am a decendent of the Cassity's that settled in Augusta Co. about 1735- 1740. If anyone has any info at all on the Cassitys I would love to compare notes. Some of my ancestors names were: John Cassity born between 1740-1745 Reuben Cassity born about 1790 Thomas Jefferson Cassity born about 1819 John William Cassity (my grgrgrandfather) born about 1843. I was told by my dad, that he thought John William married Martha Jane Smith, but he wasn't for sure. If anyone can confirm this, would you please contact me. I do know that John William's wife was half Indian, maybe Navajo. PLEASE ADRRESS YOUR REPLY TO: jandk@se-tel.com (Karen "Cassity" Tackett)
