My dictionary says Lady Day is March 25, commemorating the the visit of the angel to the Virgin Mary. Lady Day is March 25--Annunciation Day (the day that the Virgin Mary was told she was pregnant). It also marked the beginning of the new year, both legally and seasonally (real close to the equinox) in England and her colonies. New Year in England and her colonies was technically changed from March 25 until Jan. 1 on Sept. 2, 1752 when England gave up the Julian calendar, eliminated 11 days from the calendar, and began using the Gregorian calendar (which had been used by the rest of Europe for 170 years). The new calendar added 11 minutes and 14 seconds to each year. Even though Jan. 1 became the New Year, legally and by the calendar, people continued to use Lady Day to mark many legal agreements. It was the "old new year" and dates were remembered as OS or NS, Old Style or New Style. The peppercorn is simply the idea of using a "token" payment something that is essentially worthless, like a single peppercorn. Some Augusta Co. deeds from the time use an ear of Indian corn instead of a peppercorn. Today we would say "for one dollar in hand" or some such. Hope this helps. Saw in 3 separate mortgage deeds today - in the 1760's in Augusta Co VA "for payment of one pepper corn on Lady Day if the same shall be lawfully demanded". I know what a pepper corn is but does anyone know what day Lady Day was, the signifance of that day/celebration etc. I'm pretty sure that one of these mortgages was between family members and am wondering if the others were the same, but with the in-laws. If so could be a big clue. Thanks Barb
Hi Listers! This site contains information about historic & archaeological sites in the Augusta area. There are some familiar names that show up in the site. "the Hemp" house, Sugar Loaf" (where Rev. Adam Adolph Spindler lived) etc.. I'm not sure what info one can glean out of this site, but it might prove interesting to someone. Katie http://www.dai-sho-electronics.com/Site_USA_VA_AE.htm

Can anybody tell me the maiden name (with a source) of Henrietta Williams, wife of James, shown here in the 1860 Bath co VA census? They were probably married in late 1850 or 1851, since James was with his mother Nancy in the 1850 Bath census and their first child is 9 in 1860. I have checked the following counties for a marriage record: Augusta, Alleghany, Bath, Greenbrier, Highland, Nelson, Pocahontas, Rockbridge, Rockingham, CD 229 (VA Marriage Index). I will also send this to the WILLIAMS-L list. James Williams 31 m wagonmaker, R=300, P=100 Henrietta 34 f William H. 9 m Mary J. 7 f Ella V. 4 f Ira L. 2 m I theorize that she is Henrietta Criser/Critzer, d/o Henry & Polly, because that's the only Henrietta of the right age in the 1850 Bath census and Henry lives only 5 houses away from them in 1860, but this is weak evidence. I'm not researching the Williams family otherwise; this is for my 1860 Bath census annotation project. Thanks for any clues, Holly ------------------- Holly Cochran email: hcochran@bigfoot.com Hollyhock Press (publisher of Bath co VA area books) http://id.mind.net/~cochran/hollyhock/
Yes, there are extra copies of the Augusta Co. Heritage Book available. You can call Ann Harris at (540) 885-3333. She does not have e-mail. If you cannot reach her, I would be glad to relay information and work with her for you and others who might have the same need. Ann and I both served on the Book Committee. Roy L. Does anyone recognize this surname: TERRELL? (Sorry if I spelt it with one L in the subject field.) Apparently Sarah Jane (Terrell) Elder, w. of Robert C. Elder, Sr., and mother of Mollie F. Elder and Robert C. Elder, Jr., remarried. She remarried John Brown. He was 12 years older than she. In the 1870 Census, he is 36, she 48. They had an 11 year old daughter Sarah Brown, circumstantial evidence of the remarriage. So, in review: Please help me with: TERRELL, ELDER, BROWN of Augusta County. I should mention that the TERRELL name as well as the ELDER name seem to be from Campbell County. Vince

Well, I am back. I still only have one line I am looking for in Augusta, but I am a little more along in my thinking abilities. Robert C. Elder... In the household of a John BROWN. Sarah A. is married to John Brown. The Elders are older, apparently children of Sarah, who may have been married before, or may have had children out of wedlock. Or there may be no connection. But we have been over this before. Here is a little add-on. LDS site is up at http://www.familysearch.org/ I think the address is... And so I entered Robert Elder and mother Sarah. Up pops the IGI of Robert Elder, s/o Mr. Elder (taa-taa... supergeniuses no?) BUT! It said the correct birth year of 1848, and it said Campbell County! A significant possibiliity! Excited, I hop to Rootsweb to sign on to the Campbell County Site! Guess what? Yup. There is none. No list either. And I already operate two lists, and haven't the time, and am always near burnout. I volunteer lookups in a number of places, including Philadelphia! So you know why I am near burnout. Can anyone find any glimmer of hope for me in all of this? It is my wife's father's line. Her grandmother was Ida Catherine Elder, married George H. Davis and lived in Rockbridge. Robert C. Elder had married Nannie J. Little (I believe Cornelia was who Nannie was), and moved to Rockbridge. Anxious to hear from someone... Thanks, Vince

Trying to locate information on Robert Black who was born in Augusta County in 1750. He married Ann Spears, probably in Augusta, moved to Tennessee and then to Kentucky. He received a pension for Rev War service. He died in Woodford County Kentucky in 1837. I am descended from Sarah Elizabeth Black whom I believe to be his daughter. Looking for parents of Robert and Ann and any information that connects Sarah to Robert and Ann. Does anyone have a Robert Black, who fits the information given, in their data bases? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Bob Thompson Prior Lake, Mn
