If anyone has an indexed 1900 census of Augusta Co., I would appreciate a lookup of Harry H. BLEASE for his place of birth, his parents and their birthplaces. The situation reminds of the story about the new arrival who was being given a tour of Heaven and its various relious enclaves. At one point he was told to creep very quietly up to the ridge of a cloud and look at another group. When he asked the reason for the special precautions he was told, <<Those are Seventh Day Adventists and they think they're the only ones here.>> I thought for many years that there were few of my surname in the USA and now I have found 3 separate groups in Va. unknown to each other or to me. Darrell, I don't know if this will be of any use to you but I will send it anyway. I was looking at the 1850 Putnam Co, WV census and noticed the name of a Hess Sensabaugh, age 22, living here at that time. I just thought I would pass this little tidbit along since it is not a common name. He is the only one listed with this last name. If you are interested, I can look and see if anyone else is living with him in the household which he is listed at. Lynn Coiner Stover
I, also, am new to the list. I am researching the Gillespie family who came with the Carr/Kerr family to Augusta Co. from Pennsylvania in the 1740's. I am particularly interested in Matthew Gillespie, his wife and any descendants. By 1759 Matthew was listed in Rowan Co., NC tax lists. I will be happy to exchange any information and would also appreciate any suggestions on where in Augusta County to look for information. I am only slightly familiar with the area but I am very anxious for new info. K. G. Titus

The way I placed the information gave the impression that the marriage of Sara Sensebaugh and Wm. Wiseman was found in the St. John's register. That's not the case. It was the births of David and Sara Frances that is recorded in the register. Sorry about that! Thanks Steve for bringing that to my attention... I have seen the book and it obviously encompasses a great deal of hard work on the committee's part. However, I might warn that the information is quite a mixed bag -- some appears to be very good and some is questionable. Because sources are not consistently cited and articles aren't footnoted, it is somewhat hard to separate the good from the not-so-good. Unfortunately, as well, the book gets off to a rather dubious start by quoting the "diary" of Margaret Lynn Lewis, the wife of the first Augusta County settler, John Lewis. Margaret Lynn Lewis' diary is bogus, not meant to be a hoax but more than likely written in the late 19th century as a piece of fiction for a periodical. At any rate, the book is still worth getting because it pulls together a great deal of scattered Augusta County information, has a fairly complete list of churches with short histories, etc. Nancy Sorrells -----Original Message----- From: Mccthescot@aol.com <Mccthescot@aol.com> To: VAAUGUST-L@rootsweb.com <VAAUGUST-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, April 12, 1999 11:29 PM Subject: Re: [VAAUGUST-L] Augusta County Va Heritage Book 1999 >In a message dated 4/12/99 4:33:32 PM Pacific Daylight Time, Frhutch@aol.com >writes: > > Can anyone comment on the Augusta County Heritage Book in terms of its > substantive content, its genealogical value, and whether they received the > book after ordering? > > Welcome your private comments as well as a posting to this site. >> > > >I believe I ordered two books either two or three years ago. Sorry. I accidently sent this out with an incorrect subject header last night. Our first Thomas Malone is said to have come from County Waterford in Ireland to Pennsylvania in 1775. I think we may have located him near Hanover, York Co. Either he or his son Thomas Jr, married into the Iler [Oiler - Oyler] family. They then moved to the James River above Buchanan, in what is now Botetourt County Virginia. The Malones intermarried with the MOORE and JARROTT families who migrated to Kanawha and Mason Counties (W) VA. Seeking information on these families. Juhling McClung
I am hoping to find more information about a 63-year old William WHITE who was living with William and Martha VINES and family in Dist. No. 2 1/2 Augusta County per the 1850 census. William WHITE was still residing with the same family in the South River Township, Rockbridge County in the 1870 census. Can anybody help with the WHITE family from either Augusta or Rockbridge County? Barbara DiMunno
