Becca, I don't know about the will, but the scrapbook appears to be in the possession of the Library of Virginia, as evidenced by the following card catalogue record: http://eagle.vsla.edu/cgi-bin/bible.gateway?bib=0011-68760 If he is descended from Rev. Anthony Jacob Henckel (1668-1728), then the following records should be of interest as well: http://eagle.vsla.edu/cgi-bin/bible.gateway?bib=0009-97160 http://eagle.vsla.edu/cgi-bin/bible.gateway?bib=0010-03260 I had run across the latter two items earlier when I was doing some searching on behalf of a Hinkle that I know. -- Mary Taffet mdtaffet@syr.edu Rvht@aol.com wrote: > > I am looking for the will of Dr. A.D. "John Portlock was a white baby that the soldiers found in an Indian camp. They took him to a fort called Lock Port. They reversed the name and called him John Portlock. I always thought it was my Great Grandfather, but as I located information on him, I realized that this was not true. Later, when I was unable to find information on his grandfather, John Portlock, I wondered if he was the baby found in the Indian Camp." Our Ancestor, John Portlock's Rev. War Pension App. states that he was born in Shenandoah. We haven't found a Portlock family in the area in 1765, (his birth date), although there are a lot of Portlocks in Norfolk, VA. Portlock is an established name in the Norfolk area. Our question -- Is there, or has there ever been, a Lock Port up in the Shenandoah Valley. If so, it may give credence to this story. 3. The Scotch-Irish (which is a term these people placed upon themselves in the mid-19th century to differentiate their culture from the famine Irish who were entering America) did settle up and down the Valley, but were heavier in southern Augusta Co. and in northern Rockbridge Co. In the 18th century this area was known as the Irish Tract because of the heavy concentration of Ulster Scots. The markers for locating these communities are Presbyterian churches (almost all Scotch-Irish were Presbyterian) and there are 2 churches (Fort Defiance and Fishersville are the nearest villages) with churches about 260 years old, and then there are six other churches in the more southern part of the county and northern Rockbridge which are just over 250 years old. A good book to read to give perspective on this is Howard Wilson's Tinkling Spring: Headwater of Freedom. 3. Judy & Joyce, I don't know whether this will help or not, but my ancestor, John Lewis, was the founder of Staunton, and was from Ireland. There were at least 3 other John Lewis's in Virginia during that time -- mine was called "The Irish John Lewis". He was from Donegal County, Ireland. His mother is believed to have been Scottish. So, I can at least say that Staunton had some Scots-Irish there. -- Mary Taffet mdtaffet@syr.edu BaggyGenes wrote: > > Hi Joyce -- I received one answer, to date -- sorry, I thought it had > gone to the list. 3. To: Rae Jean, and others who may have missed the intent of this announcement. Linda Lewis, VAGenWeb Coordinator, founder of USGenWeb Archives (and a lot of other things), has been diligently scanning vol. II pages of Chalkley's "Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia," and her announcement was in celebration of the completion of 2/3rd of this three vol. work. Chalkley contains most of the early court records of Augusta County from its beginning to 1800 and is the starting place for anyone doing serious research in Augusta County. Linda was generously handing out bouquets to the rest of us who had a hand in getting this project online. But she forgot to give herself a bouquet. I have lived here all my life and would be happy to answer any questions about VA (if I know the answer) that you or someone else may have. In my job I use the list below for all the counties, cities & town in Virginia. (Sorry I don't work at the Courthouse.) Remember, all cities in Virginia are independent of the counties. In other words, you will not find a city within county boundaries. Anyway, I started to look into the Weed family and found a Shaver connection to my Weed family, not unusual Shaver is a pretty common name. But now I find that the Weed family also is in LaSalle County IL, where my Shaver's ended up, and that (specifically) Edmund Weed, came from VA, possibly Rockingham Co., VA, where his wife Keziah Walker came from. (Rockinigham is where I do extensive research on my Shaver line) so, If someone has information on Edmund Weed's marriage to Keziah Walker-daughter of David Walker, please let me know. I found from the book "Ottawa Old and New" a book on the history of Ottawa of LaSalle County Ill, that Dr. David Walker came to LaSalle County from Rockingham in 1826 he was accompanied by his wife Phoebe (Finley) Walker. Any other information on this Weed family, especially with a connection to the Weed's of Stamford, would be greatly appreciated. I hope that this accounting is understandable. In doing research for over 4 years now I have found many coincidences, but this one really threw me, I'm connected to my husbands family long before we we're married and vise-versa, but that's another story. Happy Hunting Sue K.

    3. This is interesting, Lynn. 'Scuse me if I'm a little behind here - This explains a lot of things we didn't understand about Chalkley's. I was looking at a Lincoln history today, looking at the pictures <G>, and it showed pictures of the courthouses Lincoln regularly attended court in the 8th district of IL, and between 1850-1860 the courthouses he attended were anywhere from a big stone building to a rough log cabin to somebody's living room. The baby days of our court system - who would have guessed it would become so complicated. It no longers matters if you're guilty or innocent, only how your case is argued. Maybe we're learning how it felt to be branded!
