John, FYI -- These same Census Images are now available as part of family tree maker's genealogylibrary.com site (which has a subscription fee -- I already have a subscription, so I don't recall the price). I went there last night and found images from the 1850 Virginia census for several of my ancestors, and was able to confirm a relationship I had only expected might be true. There is an index, and the images, if available, are accessible from the index. You can also download the images, which I did. -- Mary Taffet mdtaffet@syr.edu John Anderson wrote: > > The idea of digitized images of census documents online is, I think, > excellent, I don't normally plug products but I recently purchased from > Family Tree Maker images of the 1850 Census of Kentucky. BTW, I ran across a John Sanders mixed in with the Ls on 360.gif in case anyone researching Sanders can't find one - and it might be taken as a warning to the rest of us to check pages other than those carrying our alphabetical listings ('course I didn't :^). I'm all for more census images online. You can't beat the convenience. An alternative I've used, and have been very pleased with, is ordering the census microfilm at my local library. My local library can order ANY year census film (1790-1920) from ANY county from ANY State through interlibrary loan. It costs $1 per film ordered, which I consider a bargain price. I've ordered more than a dozen microfilms that way. It usually takes about 1-2 weeks for the films to arrive, but then I get to keep them for a month to view at my leisure. The only disadvantage is that they are not indexed. It pays to ASK your local reference librarian if that option is available. Linda
Sue, I have 2 isolated names. Maybe they'll fill in some little corner of your puzzle. In 1826 Salome [Sally, Sarah] Funkhouser married Jacob Gabbert in Augusta County. Her probable birth date would potentially make her close to your family. Her father was Isaac Funkhouser. Juhling McClung

The idea of digitized images of census documents online is, I think, excellent, I don't normally plug products but I recently purchased from Family Tree Maker images of the 1850 Census of Kentucky. Not only do you get the actual images, without transcription errors but the images have been enhanced and the program allows the user to zoom in and out for easier reading. The CD's are indexed which makes the search a lot easier. I know FTM has 1850 for Kentucky, Virginia, and North Carolina. The cost is not cheap at $49.95 but in this case I believe it is worth it. The 1810 Augusta County VA census images are now online in the USGenWeb Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/va/augusta/census/1810/ This was an experiment to see how the proposal made by S-K Publications actually works. If there is sufficient interest among Augusta County researchers to add additional Augusta County census years, we can do that. Children were George, James, and Virginia. I don't understand the discrepancy in spelling of names, perhaps misunderstanding of census taker. He was granted land in 1742. Where did he live before moving to Augusta Co., VA? In the Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia, Vol. 1, Feb. 12, 1745, "David Davis to show cause against paying William Morrison freedom dues". Also "William Morrison to have his freedom dues paid out of the attached estate of David Davis". Does anyone know why David Davis would be paying freedom dues to William Morrison??? The 1787 Reconstructed Census of Virginia by Yantis identified two Carson families: James Carson and Thomas Carsen. I found no marriages in Wulfeck's Virginia Marriages. The number of Carsons seemed to have dimished in Augusta around 1800. Did they migrate to the Carolinas and to Tennessee and Kentucky? PLEASE ADRRESS YOUR REPLY TO: ECarson203@aol.com (Rick Carson)

This would put the time period in the late 1700's and early 1800's. Sue K.
I am planning my first trip to Augusta County to research my William WHITE and Maria Ann SHELLEY lines. Can anyone recommend places for research? I'm also interested in recommendations for hotels, sites & attractions, and antiques. Barbara DiMunno
I am doing Look Ups for any SURNAMES on my WHITE - MCNEESE web site. The Look Ups are from an Internet Source Software Program that is actually 10 Search Engines into one and conducts a world wide search all at one time on any given SURNAME listed on the Web. The results from the search are from Genealogy Resources, Family Web Sites, Query Boards, Bullentin Boards, Surname Search Engines, Family Tree Maker, GenFourm, GenWeb, GenSource, Genealogy On Line, Parsonstech, Geneaolgy.org, History and Heritage, Chat Rooms, and other resources. While I do not make claims as to the accuracy of this information, I find the search results a guide to go by. If you have a SURNAME on the list of SURNAMES at the link below then contact me for your personal web search engine results. Let me state that common SURNAMES do not always provide the best results. Uncommon names often provides better results becuase theirs are not so many families or refferences on that name and what is provided is generally to the point, concise, and is exactly what you are looking for without a lot of researching. I will provide you with a page long search report on your Query SURNAME. It is an excellent personal guide for researching SURNAMES. Please pick a SURNAME from this list and reply personally to me. I can not post these reports pubically, Sorry.... If the SURNAME is not on the list then please refrain from any requests at this time. I will try to get to other SURNAMES at a future time. My time is limited and this will enable me to organize myself better for providing reports. http://members.spree.com/sip/palisades/history.htm Constance
