MAP: It has a lot of mountains on it but fails to indicate the Blue Ridge which was a barrier between the valley of Va. and southside Va. -N.C. ..and some Va. towns "slid" over into W.Va...other than that, I guess it's okay...G.L.H...
It is a nice map except for the fact that Winchester, Harrisonburg (Hassenburg), Staunton, and Lexington, Virginia are all incorrectly shown as being presently located in West Virginia. -----Original Message----- From: Pat Goodwin <pattee@planetc.com> To: VAAUGUST-L@rootsweb.com <VAAUGUST-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, May 20, 1999 12:23 AM Subject: [VAAUGUST-L] Migration Map >Here is a site of great map of the Migration Roads. >http://www.intl-research.com/images/eastbig.gif > > >==== VAAUGUST Mailing List ==== >**************************************************************** >The Augusta County mailing list page has instructions on how to > subscribe and unsubscribe from the list > Visit it at: >http://www.rootsweb.com/~vapulask/augustaquery/augustalist.htm >***************************************************************
Re Pat Goodwin's Message. <Here is a site of great map of the Migration Roads. http://www.intl-research.com/images/eastbig.gif>. There are errors in this map. It shows Winchester, Staunton, and Massenburg in present day West Virginia. They are still in Virginia. Never heard of Massenburg. Must mean Harrisonburg or thereabouts. Your comments please. JB

A number of you have asked about the availability of Wilson's "Tinkling Spring . . ." Here is what Stephanie Scott found out. - ------------------------------- Dear Carmen, I heard back from the church & they are not planning on a reprint of the book, said it would cost them $20.000. My brother in law is lending me his copy of which I'm photocopying, most all of the book. I found more ancestors in there besides my Ramsay's!! Thanks again for your help! Stephanie Scott
I have some old photographs of relatives who I can't identify. However, I know they are from my family because they were given to me by a family member. The photos were taken around the turn of the century (maybe earlier) and have the texture and firmness of a postcard. At the bottom of the picture are the words BLAKEMORE STAUNTON VA. Is there a possibility that records were kept of people who had their pictures taken at Blakemore's Studio? If anyone can shed some light on what I have here, I would deeply appreciate it. I also have some that were taken at J.M. HILL BRIDGEWATER VA. If anyone can help me out on those too, or give me the bad news that all I have is old photos with nothing written on the backs and I'll have to wonder about them for the rest of my life. Thanks Tracy Hunter
Dear listers, I am *still* annotating the 1860 Bath census with maiden names, and I can't find these women! Does anybody know the maiden names (with a source, please) of the following women found in the 1860 Bath county census? I have checked Bath/Highland birth/death records and Bath, Pocahontas, Highland, Augusta, Rockbridge, Rockingham, & Alleghany county marriage records. I've also checked Morton's History of Highland co (online), CD 229 (VA marriage index), & the LDS site online. I'm hoping that one of you will have these people in your files or other books. These are all names I have *not* sent to these lists before this. The single dates mean "married in or before this year", based on the age of their eldest child in the census. LYLE/LILE, John & Sarah/Sally -1848 (can't find this couple in the 1850 VA census either, so I suspect one or both first names to be wrong; children are Martha, Esteline, Thomas) MASTERS, Frederick & Patsy/Martha 1850-1851 MERRITT, John & Elizabeth -1834 MORRIS/MORRISON, Josiah & Jane -1841 or 1850-1860 O'KANE/O'CANE, Thomas & Anne -1832 PERKINS/PURKINS, Stephen & Mary, 1820-1850 ROBERTS, Daniel & Mary -1845 RODGERS/ROGERS, Goodman/Reuben & Harriet -1849 or -1832 RUSH, Henry E. & Mary J., -1831 SEYBERT, A.F. & Mary J. -1860 SIMPSON/SAMPSON, Rezin & Mary J. Hi all, As many of you know, I have been hosting the Augusta County VAGenWeb page for some time now. For the last couple of years I have been blessed with the assistance of Mike Gwinn who has taken responsibility for the Augusta County mailing list and the queries. Mike has recently said he must relinquish this for other interests. So, I am looking for someone to take on this responsibility. Knowning HTML would be an advantage, but not really necessary if you are interested in getting involved. There are all sorts of people to help. Carmen
Does anyone have information which would supplement the following? I am particularly interested in the place of origin of this family prior to their arrival in Augusta Co. and also the maiden name of Rebecca. Joseph Parks of Augusta County, Virginia made his will 4 February 1808. and died 21 August 1810 at the age of 84 (b. circa 1726). He was buried in the Cemetery of Tinkling Springs Church in Augusta County next to his wife, Rebecca, who died in December 1794 at the age of 60 years (born circa 1734). His will was entered into probate 24 September, 1810. They had: 1 James Parks 2 Thomas Parks d. bef. February 1808 3 Joseph Parks b. 29 February 1768 4 William Parks 5 David Parks 6 Ann Parks married William Wilson 7 Rebecca Parks married ----- Finley James D. Trabue
For those interested in the Scots in the Shenandoah Valley, I would suggest they obtain and read the Journal of Philip Vickers Fithian for 1775-76. There have apparently been several editions over the years, but to my knowledge no current ones. I obtained a copy through inter-library loan. Philip Vickers Fithian was a Presbyterian minister and graduate of Princeton. He was a native of New Jersey. Part of the journals cover a trip made by him through the western Virginia settlements. He was preaching at various Presbyterian churches throughout the area. The copy I read had a very good map showing his route. James D. Trabue

I've not see this posted so thought I'd send it along. Scroll down the page for the Mortality Schedule. You will see numerous familiar surnames listed. http://svis.org/shirley/augusta.htm#MORTALITY K
Cecil, You posted a query to this list on January 28, 1999 and I printed it up only because of the COFFMAN surname, which is one of my ancestral surnames. I printed it and hurriedly stuffed it in my COFFMAN file, which I have very little on, in order to study it later. I think I had noticed that the COFFMAN mentioned was a Jacob COFFMAN. Last month, while digging through and organizing my mother's pile of genealogical information, I ran across a researched genealogy on my SWARTZ family side and, lo and behold, you and I are definitely related. Your Esther COFFMAN who married Michael THOMAS, was the sister of my Frances COFFMAN who married Eli SWARTZ. Esther & Frances's parents were, as you correctly stated, Elizabeth BLAUSER and David COFFMAN. You knew David's parents were Jacob COFFMAN and Esther RHODES, which is what my Swartz genealogist had discovered as well...in fact, he has gone back two more generations on the COFFMAN/KAUFFMAN side and one more generation on the RHODES side. Do you have this information?? I'd be happy to share it. I don't think my relative would mind as long as you are not planning to publish and that you source my relative among your own papers. He did a decent piece of research and has everything sourced himself. Your query asked about Elizabeth BLAUSER's parents. I have one listed and it is sourced. If you'll email me, I'd be happy to share that with you as well. I just want to be careful with this information, since it is not mine and therefore would fall under copyright laws. I see you've referenced your email "by way of Michael Gwinn" and that's a pretty good reference, but one can't be too careful... I'm posting this to the AUGUSTA-L list in case we have more "cousins" out there who would like to get in on this or have more to share. In fact, your "Esther" COFFMAN was a new name to my family group sheet. I have a "________ m. to Michael THOMAS" listed. Now I can fill in that blank!! Looking forward to corresponding with you! Paula
I would love to see more census images online. Interlibrary loan is okay, but with my library the cost is $3.25 per roll and you have to wait 3-4 weeks to get the microfilm and then hope you can get the use of a reader at the library when you have time to read the film.
