Hello, I'm new to the list and would like some help finding out about a school in Staunton, Va. called Stuart Hall. My mother, who died when I was 4 yrs. old, graduated from there in 1932. I guess it was a private high school as the yearbook says she was in the College Preparatory course. If anyone knows anything about this school or knows where I might find some information I would appreciate the help. Anne W. Bradshaw Musser Muss@worldnet.att.net Proud Rootsweb sponser

The following URLs and selected entries tie the John Thompson - Mary Unknown family to just about everybody in Virginia, Tennessee, the Carolinas. It is one of the best genealogical sites I have found. Lucy Skaggs, 1762, d/o Mary Thompson and Henry Skaggs, and John Stacy, link to this Combs-Cody family. More importantly, this site pulls together information about the loyalities of the settlers to the crown, military data, and the migration from Surry of many of the settlers mentioned in Archibald's Diary (transcripts at http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore ). Who's Anna Thompson? I will try and check the dates to see if she is Archibald, Lucy, Mary and George's sister. But just exploring this site is going to take weeks. The main URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~combs/ William Cody lineage at: http://www.mindspring.com/~baumbach/cody/william.htm In 1785 Nancy Cody, daughter of William and Sinai, married David Thompson in Montgomery County. The marriage bond named William Cody as father and as bondsman (14). David Thompson and William Cody were residents in 1787 (15): . . . . 1785 Petition House of Delegates To Form Russell County John Stacy [m. Lucy Skaggs; son of Benjamin and Ann Combs Stacy] Mashack Stacy James Davidson [father of Elizabeth, wife of Simon Stacy, brother of Sinai Cody] Henry Skaggs [father of Lucy] . . . One of the several William Combs, husband of Anna Thompson, lived on Weaver Creek, a tributary of the Clinch River, near the present Buchanan County and Washington County lines. =========================== Stacy lineage(Barbara Stacy Mathews): stacy@otn.net

The National Genealogical Society Conference just held at Richmond, Virginia was wonderful. The syllabus included excellent notes from many of the workshops I didn't have time to attend. I recommend especially Leslie Smith Collier on Estate Sales (listed as S-213). Her "notes" are 3 full pages on how to get the most from estate sale documents. For instance, the etiquette of estate sales which may reveal family lines: "If the first buyer is a woman, she is very probably the widow (and could even have remarried if the timing of the sale allows). Adult children often purchase immediately after the widow." Workshops from this conference and previous ones are available on tape from Repeat Performance, 2911 Crabapple Lane, Hobart IN 46342 (219) 465-1234. (you might ask for a catalog.) Thanks so much to everyone who answered by questions on the Tinkling Spring book. I didn't realize there were so many of you out there. K. Titus
Since it doesn't look like the Tinkling Springs Church will be doing a new printing of their church history, can anyone suggest where one might find a copy to borrow or view for research? Is there someone out there who has access to a copy who might do lookups? Does the church have someone who might be willing to do lookups? I live some distance from the Augusta Co. area and it wouldn't be convenient at this time to travel there. I'm open to any suggestions. K. Titus
I noted in the VAAUGUST Mail List that the VA Directory of the USGenWeb Archives has posted the URL for the index of the 1820 Shenandoah Co., VA Census. For anyone interested, this census has been transcribed and indexed by Mrs. Owen Crickard, Route 1, Box 218, Beverly, WV 26253 and is for sale. I have no further information. JB
There are two persons listed on Augusta page who will do lookups in Wilson's "Tinkling Spring . . ." http://www.rootsweb.com/~vaaugust/augusta4.htm Of course, we would be happy to lists others who are willing.
