I have been searching for years and just tonight got a lead that made me come here and post. James Wheeler born abt. 1800 and died between 1860 and 1870. ( all based on census) I find him in Amherst in 1840 and again in 1870. According to census he was a miller by trade. He was married to a Polly Thacker or at least she was listed as mother along with James as parents of the following children: (not sure of birth order) Elizabeth Wheeler- married William Lynn 17 Feb. 1846 in Amherst Co. John Dudley Wheeler - married Margaret Painter 24 Aug 1852 in Amherst Co. Martin Wheeler- married Elizabeth Crawford 19 Nov 1858 in Amherst Co. Eliza Jane Wheeler- married Zacariah Staton 18 Jul 1860 - married 2nd Valentine Mason 9 Oct 1865 Edward Esau Wheeler- married Josephine Staton 27 Aug 1867 - married 2nd Burnette Elizabeth Staton 8 Sep 1872 in Amherst Co. - married 3rd Mollie Byers Georgiana Wheeler Caroline Wheeler- married Marshall Staton 13 Feb 1858 The above is all I have to show for abt. 20 years of research! Does anyone know or seen anything on these people? Thanks for any help!!!! Barbara in Idaho

Hello all, Last night I stumbled across a section of the "Valley of the Shadow" project that allows for a name search of newspapers from the 1850's and 1860's, including: Staunton Republican Vindicator, 1859-1865 Staunton Spectator, 1857-1861 Franklin Valley Spirit, 1859-1865 Franklin Repository and Transcript, 1863-1865 Here's the URL: http://jefferson.village.Virginia.EDU/vshadow2/news/allnews.html I did a search on GIBBONS, and now I have to figure out who the John Gibbons that was a blacksmith and died as a result of an accident in 1859 is. I found several marriage announcements, and lists of soldiers killed during the Civil War; sales of properties; court cases, etc. Lots of stuff to be found here! -- Mary Taffet mdtaffet@syr.edu
There are several indexed Virginia cemeteries listed here. http://members.tripod.com/~rosters/index-2.html K

Barbara, That URL was cut off in this message. Try the link below: http://www.dean.usma.edu/history/dhistorymaps/American%20Revolution/ARToC.htm If the above link doesn't work, then try this one, which is shorter: http://www.dean.usma.edu/history/home.html ... then choose "Department of History Maps", then "Atlases" at the bottom of the page that comes up, then "American Revolution" from the next page that comes up. Going the 2nd route allowed me to find some Civil War maps, which will be of more interest to me right now, because I have been transcribing some old letters, and a few of them were written in the Shenandoah Valley during the Civil War. -- Hope this helps, Mary Taffet mdtaffet@syr.edu http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mdtaffet/ On Thu, 8 Jul 1999, Karl Binz wrote: > Patsy, > My excitement could hardly be contained when I read this message, however > when I went to this URL - I got an ERROR message that said this url is > wrong. I am searching for information on Fleming John Carroll who lived in Craigsville, Augusta County, Virginia from before 1826 to death ca 1863. He had 4 sons that was in the Civil War, and I have been told that Fleming Sr. also died in that war but unable to locate any information on it. Would someone out there know of cemeteries in the Craigsville area that might have Any CARROLL'S at all?? Would anyone have any books of deeds etc., that might help me? Thank you.
