For those who haven't done their homework, these are the known original settlers of the Shenandoah Valley: Henry Sowter, John Brubaker, Abraham Strickler, Michael Kauffman, John Rhodes, Michael Criter, Philip and Paul Long, Martin Kauffman and Michael Rinehart. They came, according to John Wayland, from Lancaster Co, PA, arriving in 1733. Ludwick Stone, and agent for a Swiss land agent named Jacob Stover, received the original grants for 10,000 acres of land from King George II of England and from Lord Fairfax. They traveled along the Indian Road (also called the Worry Road because the travellers worried about indian attacks) to the land near Peaked Mountain, settling on the bottom lands near the Shenandoah River. There they raised families and bought and sold land until they moved on to other new territories...mine went to Tennessee. Two books that may help our new folks are: Massanutten Settled by the Pennsylvania Pilgrim, 1726, by Harry M. Strickler, copyright date 1924; and, The German Element of the Shenandoah Valley, by John Wayland. The Massanutten book is no longer in print to my knowledge, but the German Element book is available from several of the genealogical societies in the Augusta Co area. Happy hunting! Emily in Alabama
A Subject line by any other name would still mean as little as it does, apparently, here. I know I am missing many chances for a connection, but I just don't have the time to read hundreds of E-mails that say "ROLL CALL". For that matter if you think so little of your names and my time the connection is probably worth missing.(sorry to say) If you took the time to read this my names are: Shaver/Shafer, Grosvener, Rhodes/Roth, Blair, Laird, Lowman, Harris, Dunham, Welsh, Popp, Grove, Spencer, Dewey, Lionberger, Albrecht, Buckholter, Bear, Boyer. Many others in LaSalle County-IL, and Licking County-OH. Good Luck to you all. Sue K.
Hi List, Re: [VAAUGUST-L] New Subscribers Surnames I am searching in the Augusta, later Rockbridge area. CAMPBELL, FULTON, KENNADY, McCORD, McFADDEN, McMURTEY, MOORE, REID, SCHULTZE, TIDWELL. All are families that intermarried. Those we know of arrived in the Shenandoah Valley and Augusta County around 1750 and had left Virginia for points west by 1850. But of course, surprises always turn up. ATTENTION: H. Juhling McClung, I saw the names STUART & PATTERSON in your recent post, perhaps you can help me. I descend from Alexander WALKER (1718-1775) & his 2nd wife Elizabeth ______. Mrs. Katherine Bushman thought Elizabeth was a PATTERSON, sister of Mrs. Alexander STUART. Do you have any knowledge of any of these folks? One of Alexander WALKER's granddaughters, Rebecca (1812-1850), married Charles McCLUNG (1808-1882), s/o Alexander & Jane (McClung) McCLUNG. Charles & Rebecca are buried in Old Stone Cem. I'm trying to trace all of their descendants, any help would be appreciated. Let me know if you think there is some way I can help you. Thanks. Roger Connelly in Columbia MD.
Christian Coyner, son of John and Hannah (Lavel-Laywell), was born 5/30/1803. He was 11 years old when his parents moved to Ross County OH - He married Elizabeth Teter. They had a large family and moved to Iowa. Again, I'm sure these Teters were from VA. I am researching the Knowles' from Churchville, VA who relocated to Staunton. and also the Taylor lines that go back to James Taylor, I the emigrant. Todd McDaniel South Charleston, WV
Brett: Have you corresponded with Bob Graham in TX? He is interested in the Rockingham Millers. I may have sent one of your queries to him. He's a Coiner through the German Youngs from George Adam Coiner's branch. Hawpe is intermarried with these Youngs and the Coiner branch of George Michael (Mike). Have you corresponded with Gary Hawpe? Also, I don't know if we've mentioned it on this list, but when Waynesboro was founded the only settler there at that time was the widow "Tees" which has been interpreted to be Teaford. I don't know if anyone has ever connected her to that family. None are married into the Coiner family, but I find this name and its variations everywhere in Augusta County and neighboring counties. If this is really the German Duifford (Huguenot?), this would make sense as Waynesboro is primarily German while Staunton was primarily Scotch-Irish! John Coyner, son of Martin Luther and Elizabeth (Rhea) Coyner, married Nancy Zimmerman in 1817 and moved to Jessamine County KY. They moved to Marian County IN in 1831, to KY again in 1834 and to IL in 1851 where he died. Nancy died in 1834. Elizabeth Rhea's Scotch Irish blood gave all the children of Martin very itchy feet, they were constantly moving! As a result all of these children are scattered through 4 states and very difficult to research.
