Emily, Some of this information isn't entirely accurate, because as far as I know, Adam Miller is said to be the first white settler in the Shenandoah Valley. In 1741, he had already been there for 15 years, making his arrival circa 1726. He predates the Jacob Stover party by several years. I have no info on these other names you mention below, but I caution the assumption that they were the only original settlers. Besides Adam Miller, John Lewis is also said to be one of the earliest settlers in the area, arriving circa 1730. I assume there must have been other early settlers as well. -- Mary Taffet mdtaffet@syr.edu ESH300@aol.com wrote: > > For those who haven't done their homework, these are the known original > settlers of the Shenandoah Valley: Henry Sowter, John Brubaker, Abraham > Strickler, Michael Kauffman, John Rhodes, Michael Criter, Philip and Paul > Long, Martin Kauffman and Michael Rinehart. Hi All I have been looking for yeeeears for the parents of my Michael HARMAN b.1767 in PA d. 1807 in Staunton, Augusta Co., VA . He married Elizabeth FRIEDLY in 1790 in Frederick Co., VA. Michael HARMAN died intestate and in 1807 John MCDOWELL was the surety on the Letter of Administration papers. Also in 1807 John MCDOWELL was appointed one of the guardians for Michael HARMAN's children. I've decided to track all the people my Michael associated with beginning with John MCDOWELL in hopes that I can find them living in the same area, traveling to new areas together etc. Is anyone working on MCDOWELL genealogy that would know who the parents and spouse of this John MCDOWELL would be? Thank you so much for your help. Lin Morin LinLB5@aol.com
Barb, For definitive info on Kissling, check out the following webpage: http://www.megsinet.com/~sharprm/library/kesling.htm My ancestor Jacob Kisling was the son of Christopher Kissling and his 2nd wife Anna Christina Lingel. Anna Gertrauda Kautz was Christopher's first wife. Earl Kisling and a person by the name of Wolf Sakowski have spent much time and much money researching the Kissling line back into Germany. They have found many authoritative records on this line. The Kautz line is also mentioned on this webpage. Also, I might add that some records for my Jacob Kisling and his wife Anna Barbara Baer, in terms of baptisms of children, are available through records of the Peaked Mountain Church. The Ermentrout name is also connected with that church because I remember seeing it among the records. -- Mary Taffet mdtaffet@syr.edu bevans wrote: > > And you thought yours were hard to find... > > introducing the (1755-81 Augusta County) > > Couts[Kautz] Boys: Dad-Christian, Sons-John (wife Elizabeth) and Teter > (sometimes Christian), and their in-laws the Kisslings, Ermentrouts, > Wrights, Starks, Vaughn, Masons, and a Gordon ... > > THE BOYS- were also terrible spellers with German accents. My name is Sharon Moses. I am a descendant of John Antill b. 1717 who was living in MD up to about 1790. There were reports that an Antill or two were living in the German and Dunkard counties of PA in th 1760's. Parts of that area were once part of Augusta Co. VA. Would like anything on these early pioneers and any possible connection to my Antills who moved into the same area later in 1790 or 1792. My ancestor ran a grist mill on Muddy Creek. It seems his son John b. 1763 set up many saw mills and grist mills in eastern OH, northern WV, and in the panhandle of WV, and maybe also in St. Louis MO. It also seems as though one or more of his sons moved to areas where he had built these mills. He had a son James in Westburg VA. James had a son Josiah who is listed as having been a millwright. Son John in Monroe Co. Ohio. Grandson Louis in Cameron WV who ran a sawmill with his own sons, and Harvey in Littleton Wetzel Co. WV. (Harvey was an undertaker) There was also a grandson John, who died in a sawmill accident in Cass MO. Would appreciate any information on any of these people and any of these mills. Also trying to find out where John b. 1717 came from and where his parents came from. Family stories say Scotland or Ireland. Could he have been a French Huguenot that came here by way of Scotland or Ireland? Some of the grandchildren married into French Huguenot families. Working on Antill, Antil, Antel, Antell, Antle and any surnames that married into this line. These include Quinlan, Wilson, Copeland, Draper, Lemley, Pethtell, Wise, Guess and others. Thank you, Sharon Antel Moses ss and others. Thank you, Sharon = Antel Moses

Bonnie, Does the Rev. Benjamin Arbogast who married Frances Cornelia 'Fannie' Gibbons and moved to Georgia among your Arbogast's anywhere? Jacob Miller -- tell me more. My old letters mention a Jacob Miller that I cannot identify. I think it might be referring to the Jacob Miller who founded Woodstock (once called Muellerstadt), but I can't say for certain. Is the Mary Miller who married John Keffer in 1785 among the Miller's in that book? -- Mary Taffet mdtaffet@syr.edu Bvmiller@aol.com wrote: > > My families: Vance, Arbogast, Raines, Bible, Skidmore, Morral, Turner, > Davis, Bennett, > Mullenax, Waybright. > My husband's families: Jacob Miller of 1748 (we have the book), Bowman, > Garber, Van Pelt, Charlton, Knicely, to name a few. > > Bonnie Vance Miller
Hello, I am not researching Zirkle, but my mother's best friend as she was growing up in Harrisonburg was a Mae Zirkle, who married a Pete Markey (unfortunately I don't know how to really spell her husband's last name, even though their daughter Patty was my best friend when I was growing up in Harrisonburg, at least until we moved -- the surname, however it is spelled, sounds like marquis). I am also not researching Henkel, but I have a friend who is. Bart Hinkle, who lives not far from Warrenton, VA, told me about Rev. Henckel, a Lutheran minister who came to Pennsylvania probably during the 1700's. The Henkel's in Virginia are most likely connected to this Lutheran minister, whose descendants came to Virginia. The Library of Virginia has a lot of information on this family, at least according to descriptions available in their Digital Archives. -- Mary Taffet mdtaffet@syr.edu Norma Lewis wrote: > > I have two Zirkles in my index - isn't this interesting, this is an almost > entire German family as opposed to some which are almost entirely > Scotch-Irish! > [snip] > -----Original Message----- > From: Rvht@aol.com <Rvht@aol.com> > To: VAAUGUST-L@rootsweb.com <VAAUGUST-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: Sunday, July 18, 1999 8:33 AM > Subject: [VAAUGUST-L] Roll Call > > |Researching: > | > |Henkel > |Allen > |McCune > |Weekes > |O'Roark > |Zirkle > |Almarode > |Wampler > |Huffer > |Whismas

Nancy, Interesting! My Isaac Gibbons married Mary Gangwer. They came to Virginia from Pennsylvania because Mary's father, John George Gangwer, had moved there first. Whatever the proper spelling of this surname is, there are many variants -- GANGWER and GONGWER are but two of the spelling variants. I bet that Joseph GONGWER must have been a descendant of John George GANGWER. What more do you have on Joseph Gongwer? -- Mary Norma Lewis wrote: > > [snip] > Tollarus md. first Nancy Gongwer, daughter of > Joseph and Jane. > [snip]
