What? 100 members LEFT? Because of 'squirrel" tallk? I can't believe it. I mean, I can, but I think folks need to lighten up. Genealogy is more then just whom-married-whom and had what kids. Life is more then that. Knowing more about their day-to-day lives enriches our undertanding of them and us. I wish I'd been a list member then! I guess I'm just amazed how different Lists have such different "personalities". Ok. Off my soapbox. Im trying to find out more about where Lucinda Reed and William Gray Reed . William was married in Augusta County and had some of his children there before moving into Rockingham County as did Lucinda. We do not know Lucinda husbands name or parents. Actually, Jean, this started with me quoting from Chalkley's, I was serious, the data was serious - the early pioneers - 1745 era - paid a tax with squirrel pelts, wolf heads and crows - they had to provide a certain number of each at regular times - we decided this was for pest reduction to protect crops and stock - then things got wierd and we got all these strange comments and recipes - we got into moonshine recipes and exactly how it was made. A lot of list members got impatient with us, but it was very interesting, we all learned a lot about what it was really like to live in that area in 1745. It was certainly much different than now, or even 100 years ago. I regularly research these details as it helps me to establish time periods and neighborhoods - Mike Gwinn was listowner then and he told us to quit because he was getting complaints, but he wrote me that he really enjoyed it! Most of us did! I agree with Mary, here - any written resource is only as good as the person who wrote it. Wayland's is notoriously full of errors - however, you can use these sources for clues if you check the info against some primary info like church records. I have found many names obviously settled in the valley very early which Wayland never mentions. This goes for family histories also, the Koiner History is full of errors, however, it is good for joining families together and that is what I've used it for. Many of the dates don't check out. You just have to keep rechecking! This roll call is very informative for all of us, although I believe there are about 500 people on this list, or used to be, and if they all answer the roll call it would stuff our mail boxes. I don't mind, but it seems to upset some people. BTW Bill Hobbs' squirrel recipe is certainly the best. I'm still haunted by squirrel brains inside the skull, and you have to crack the skull to eat them - Yuk! Just thought I'd share the wealth! From our meanderings some 6 months ago?
