    2. Good morning. Question: Does anyone know how to read a census page from the 1820 census records? There seem to be more columns but they don't appear to be divided like the columns of the later records. Plus, there are no headings and I cannot get a blank one to come up so that I can see how to read it. Any help would be a blessing. Anita McClung Fayette County, WV

    1. Capt. Henry MCCLUNG
    2. Hello, again. I am hoping that someone can provide me with some other information on Capt. Henry McClung, b. abt. 1775, Rockbridge County and died about 1846, Augusta County. He was married to Elizabeth Alexander. Capt. Henry McClung can be found in the 1830 census of Augusta County, but not in the 1840 census of any county. In the 1850 census of Augusta, wife Elizabeth is living in the McClung Hotel in Staunton with other family members. Son, James Archibald McClung is the inn keeper. Elizabeth died about 1869, Augusta County. Can anyone confirm Capt. Henry's death for me, if not in that year, but in any year in Augusta? Thank you. Anita McClung Fayette County, WV

    3. Again, and I reply to all, I have never had success with familysearch.org except with searching the family history library catalog, which can be found down on the right side of the homepage. The Ancestral File and Pedigree Research File are ok, but they can only give you clues. There are many errors in it, including my own. In one of my families, my line was connected to the wrong person. I complained and sent documentation but I never even got a reply. The films, however, are different, and I urge anyone to try them out, particularly wills, deeds, court records, etc. I have been fortunate to spend six weeks, a week at a time, in Salt Lake City, and I would go back in a second if I could. I do not belong to the Church but I sure appreciate their microfilms. Pat Pat At 10:31 PM 5/20/2004, [email protected] wrote: >Sue, > >I am a part of the McClungs of Greenbrier County. 2. Sue, I am a part of the McClungs of Greenbrier County. I can trace my line straight back to William 'Grandfather Billie' McClung, b. in 1738. He was my sixth great grandfather and he was called Grandfather Billie because he was the first of the McClungs to settle in this area. Yes, again, some of the information that can be found on thru the LDS may or may not be correct, but often it is incomplete and this includes information submitted by members of LDS themselves. Just like any other information gathered for tracing roots, you cannot take it for gold unless you have seen the documentation. Anita McClung Fayette County, WV

    3. The deed indexes are microfilm copies and refer to the microfilm copies of the deeds in the deed books. It has nothing to do with accuracy of entering. I agree that some DAR listings could be questionable. In my own research for the Kincaid family, James Kincaid/Elizabeth marriage in particular, I checked Chalkley's and then proceeded to find all of the deed and court records that Chalkley's referred to. The only thing I have not pursued are things labeled Cicrcuit Court causes ended. althought I have had indications that they may be available at the Library of Virginia. Jane Dean, daughter of John Dean, married Andrew McClung. They were married in Bath Coun ty in 1802. Jane McClung married There are possibly other McClung connections but no Henry that I'm aware of in my research. Jane Kincaid is listed as an heir of James Kincaid in a deed dated 24 June 1850 between William M. Kincaid and the heirs of James Kincaid. She is listed as Jane McClung. This deed was found in Greenbrier County records. The land that is being sold was "conveyed to the said William M. Kincaid by the heirs at law of Washingtoin McClung which deed is of record in the deeds office of Greenbrier County court...." I might add that I looked at $400 worth of deeds through the Family History Center films when my cousin and I were trying to establish the father of James Kincaid. We looked at every Kincaid record we could find, which included Chester County, Pennsylvania. There are quite a few McClung marriages in "Greenbrier County Marriages, 1782-1900, Volume 1, by Larry G.Shuck, but Henry is not among them. This hasn't beenmuch help, but it does give you at least three counties to research if you haven't already done so. I know, Thanks a lot from you to me ;-(. 3. Pat, are you on the Kincaid list? If not please join us. Several of us are working on the Greenbrier/Alleghany Kincaids and there are several on the list from your line. As you probably know your James' brother John married Elizabeth's sister Alice. John lives on the Jackson River on land sold to him by Andrew/Mary Kincaid. James/Elizabeth's son Adam Dean Kincaid says in an interview for a county bio. that his grandfather was Andrew Kincaid. One of the things we are trying to do is prove or disprove that James was son of the Andrew, (wife Mary) who died in Greenbrier Co. in 1811. Tell me what you have found out about James. I am a descendent of Andrew by daughter Elizabeth Miller. 2. Tootsie
    3. Hello Everyone, I have been hanging around hoping someone would post something about these two surnames. I have a James WHITE d. abt. 1843 South Branch who I would like to know his parents and have no clue how he got to Hampshire Co. His first son's given name was Isaac White. His other children's names were Mary E. Sarah C. Virginia and Luke. He married Elizabeth ROBINSON 1823. The ROBINSON's I connect to her are John, Mary (don't know if this is a sister, wife) Lucinda and William ROBINSON. Isaac named his children (in case there is a naming pattern) 1st wife Margaret JACOBS....Mary C.; Ella B. (Bell) Charles E., Anna Elizabeth; 2nd wife..Mary E. MARTIN .Ina Montresa Rachel; Jesse Melvin; Clarence Earl; Walter E.; Francis I. (daughter); George T (Tobias I think) James Clifford; and Martha Gertrude. Someone at the WV Culture History Center suggested I search Augusta also. I have REV papers for a James WHITE m. to GIBSON. No parents given even for him. Thank you, Tootsie Shoemaker T. Michigan I just hope someone at least recognizes a naming pattern or something. -- "Lord, keep your arm around my shoulders....and your hand over my mouth."

    1. LDS
    2. Sue/Alex
    3. LDS does have some excellant primary type material available. For instance a Kincaid cousin is going through the reels that house the personal property tax lists looking for Kincaids. It isn't conclusive but does show up the individuals that actually lived in the county. You can often follow groupings or a certain individual. When LDS actually films church and county records it is a goldmine. What you have to be careful of are the submissions by individuals. When you look at Chalkley deeds you can sometimes sort various individuals with the same names by where they owned land. Here again patterns emerge. There are also McCLungs in Greenbrier Co. Good luck, Sue in Newport ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, May 20, 2004 9:19 AM Subject: Re: [VAAUGUST] Henry C. 2. Many migrants from Augusta and Rockbridge Counties landed in Eastern Tennessee. The McClung name is prominant in early TN records. Today, there is the McClung Collection (Genealogy Library operated by the Eastern Tennessee Historical Socitey.) in Knoxville.
