Why don't you try there. If you learn anything, let us know. 3. Anita - There are no birth/death records before mid-1853. Marriage records go back much further. I assume you've compiled some data on all the other McClungs who were in the area at the right time and who could be logical parents of Charles, given their ages. Have you checked the wills & probate & land records of all those McClungs? If anybody left anything to Charles or transferred land to him (and if you're lucky, specified a relationship), that's where it will be. These records are all available thru interlibrary loan from the Lib. of VA. Did any other McClungs appear to accompany him to Harrison co? That would be another avenue to follow. Another thing I would do is check the death records in Augusta of all the other McClungs of his generation (say born 1800-1820) to see if any of them have parents that you do not already know about, just to make sure you have a complete (as possible) pool of possible parents. --Holly ------------------- Holly Cochran - Hollyhock Press (publisher of Bath co VA area books) http://www.hollyhockpress.com/

    3. Marriage Records were kept in Virginia before the 18th century. There is an excellent article about 18th Century Virginia Law at: http://home.hiwaay.net/~woliver/Virginia_Law.html This may answer some of your questions. 2. Hello. I'm reading these in order to aid my WEHRLY research. When you visit the courthouse in Staunton, could you see if there's a birth record for Samuel J. WEHRLY, born 24 Mar 1797? The surname may have been spelled differently in that area and time, once as Warley. If the record exists, I like to contact them to order a copy. Just need to know if one exists. Probable parents: John WARLEY/WEHRLY and Magdalena ACKER. Thanks, in advance. Russell H.. 2. Jim, I was afraid of that. I know they were not required to maintain records until the 1850s, just thought that perhaps some of the counties did before. What is amazing is that you can find records for WV prior to statehood. I know our court house have a book of marriages dating back to 1838. Strange how the counties that would later become WV have records prior to 1853. Thanks, Anita McClung

    3. Virginia started requiring that births and deaths be reported in 1853. No government records of births and deaths exist prior to that date. Sometimes it is possible to determine the father of a male from the personal property tax lists, which started in 1782. These lists were prepared each year for each county and city. 2. Can someone tell me whether any birth records from the 1810 period for Augusta County exist? I have been trying for nearly two years to find the parents of Charles McClung, b. abt. 1810, married Sarah Gabbart in 1834. They had three children in Augusta County before relocating to Harrison County, VA/WV where they appear in the 1840 census records. Charles died in Harrison County in 1868 at the age of 58. Parents names were listed as "unknown." We were thinking that it have been possible that his parents died and he was brought up by someone else. We have looked everywhere we know to look and CANNOT find his parents names. We have exhausted pretty much of all available resources and still no names for his parents. Is there anyone on this list that can help me???? This has been a HUGE brick wall and I know that someone out there has to know the answer that we are looking for. Anita McClung Fayette County, WV

    3. This might be overkill but thought I would pass it along as well. You can go to http://www.ancestry.com/save/charts/census.htm for downloadable sample forms of the actual Census. Its on ancestry.com but is 100% FREE. You don't need a paid subscription to access them, but it does require that you have Adobe. The forms show all columns of information and all questions that were asked for each individual Census from 1790 - 1930.
