    2. For those on this list who may not know about the Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia (or forgot), all three volumes (every name index) are online at http://www.rootsweb.com/%7echalkley/index.htm Extracted from the Original Court Records of Augusta County 1745-1800 by Lyman Chalkley. They have been a wealth of information to me in my research. Happy Hunting. Pat

Does anyone know why Augusta County would attract citizens from Rockbridge and Nelson (and possibly Pittsylvania) Counties immediately after the Civil War? 3. Anita, Have you invesgated the possibility of Bath, Rockingham or Greenbrier when it was still part of Virginia? I have an |Andrew McClung who married Jane Dean 2 December 1802 in Bath County. Jane was the daughter of John Dean who died in 1811. He lived on the same property, but the taxes, I believe, jumped around between Greenbrier and Bath. Just a thought. 1. Valentine Jones, 1770's
    2. I'm looking for Valentine Jones. He was born in Augusta Co about 1760, enlisted in the militia in 1777 and served under Capt. James Bell. His brother Berryman substituted for Valentine in the latter part of the war. Both brothers moved to Greenbrier Co in the 1780's. Valentine and Berryman's father may be John Jones, although I don't know if he is the Reverend John Jones referenced in parish records. Valentine may also related to Gabriel Jones, who is very prominent in Augusta Co court records. If anyone knows anything about the Joneses of Augusta County, please contact me. Thank you, Kathy Jones-Kristof

    3. Hoave you looked in Nicholas County, West Virginia? [email protected] wrote:Can someone tell me whether any birth records from the 1810 period for Augusta County exist? I have been trying for nearly two years to find the parents of Charles McClung, b. abt. 1810, married Sarah Gabbart in 1834. They had three children in Augusta County before relocating to Harrison County, VA/WV where they appear in the 1840 census records. Charles died in Harrison County in 1868 at the age of 58. Parents names were listed as "unknown." We were thinking that it have been possible that his parents died and he was brought up by someone else. We have looked everywhere we know to look and CANNOT find his parents names. We have exhausted pretty much of all available resources and still no names for his parents. Is there anyone on this list that can help me???? This has been a HUGE brick wall and I know that someone out there has to know the answer that we are looking for. 1. Re: [VAAUGUST] Re: birth records
    2. Sharon, Yes, it is like "so where do I look?" Fayette County in what is now West Virginia was formed nearly 60 years before WV became a state. And although it was here when it was still Virginia, it too was a part of what is now Logan Greenbrier, Giles and Kanawha Counties. Even up into the 1900s, neither Fayette County nor Nicholas County could decide where to "draw the line." So, there again, where do you look for records? BOTH PLACES! Thanks, Anita

    1. Re: [VAAUGUST] Re: birth records
    2. Anita, all of the counties do not have records prior to 1863, only the ones who were already Virginia counties, as near as I can tell. My Boone County, VA (WV) ancestors are found in both Kanawha and Giles County, VA records as well as Logan, since Boone was made up of these counties before leaving VA. As you know, Boone, Kanawha and Logan are now in WV, but Giles remains a Virginia County. Boone even gave a little bit to Lincoln County, WV. Ah,these wonderful, drive-us-crazy Virginia Counties! It does appear as if he and Sarah left Augusta and went to Harrison County, WV with some of her family. Thanks for the advice. Anita McClung Fayette County, WV
