I know very little about the Gays, except that John FrazierJr., ca 1739 ish married Jennett Gay. Jennett may be the daughter of John Gay, one of the early settlers to Augusta County. I have found precious little on him, except that he was a member of Tinkling Spring church and was in the court records several times. At this point, I have no idea if he might connect to others in Pocahontas county. I don't even know his wife's name or his vitals. I need to locate a will for him to see if my Jennett is named. John and Jennett's son Samuel Frazier married Ann ? (quite possibly Gay) and they moved to the Kanawha river valley and founded Fraziers Bottom, WV. I know their lives were hard, brutal maybe, but couldn't someone have kept a family Bible??? <sigh> Constance

    2. I am descended from Martha Gay of Pocahontas County, VA, now WV. She married Jesse Smith and the marriage bond was signed by Tacy (who is female) Smith's 'x' and also two men who were Ewings. Since this area was also, I believe, once part of Augusta County (certainly was Bath County, VA once). I may have some Gay ancestry in common with you. I don't know ANYTHING about Martha Gay at all or any other Gays. I'd love to get started on that line. Their daughter, Alice Smith, married Abraham Hill, son of Richard Hill and Nancy McNeel. They are all buried there in Pocahontas County which I visited last month. I was born and reared in Charleston, Kanawha County, WV, where my great-grandmother, Elizabeth Ellen Hill Hume moved in 1917 after her husband died at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, following the arson destruction of their Valley View Hotel in Marlinton, Pocahontas County. Her daughter, Madeleine Hume, married my grandfather LeRoy Madison Gates. Sincerely, Sharon Lee Gates Apopka, FL 32712-2046 407-814-9644 phone

    1. Augusta County Settlers
    2. Dear List: I'm new to the list today and wanted to say Hello and get acquainted. I am descended from some of the early settlers of Augusta Co. My direct line ancestors were John Frazer and Isabelle Moody of Long Meadow Run. According to court records, John Frazer purchased his property in 1749 from the Beverly Patent. John Frazer, his wife Isabelle, and his 2 brothers-in-law, James and Robert Moody, were probably in the area before 1740. I don't know exactly when they arrived, but James Moody had purchased his property by 1740 according to the Beverly Patent. They supposedly came from PA when the land in the valley was made available and so many Scotch-Irish folk settled the Upper Valley area, leaving the Moody parents, Robert and Isabelle, behind for the wilderness. Some of their children were baptized by Rev. Craig at the Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church in the mid 1740s. John was a constable and worked on the road with his brother in law several times. He was killed by some accident prior to 1758 when his wife Isabelle is called Widow Frasure in the estate John Craig. The children, Samuel, James, John and John, Sr.'s widow, Isabelle, are shown on the list of subscribers for the church in 1765-1770, living in the Lower Quarter of Christian's Creek. John and Ann Frazer, the younger children of John and Isabelle, inherited the property of their uncle Robert Moody and were involved with a long law suit with the heirs of James Moody for the estate. John and his wife, Jennett Gay, had a son, Samuel C. Frazer, who moved his family to WV around 1799 and established my family line in Fraziers Bottom, Putnam County, WV. I would love to make contact with any researchers who share heritage or have information about the Frazers, Moodys, Gays, Craigs and other early families. Nice to meet you all, Constance Frazier Flagg Spring, KY

    1. Re: [VAAUGUST] Augusta County Research
    2. Do any of you THOMPSON or ELSEY (ELZA) family researchers have information about a SALLY or SARAH THOMPSON who married EDWARD ELSEY in 1783, or, if a second marriage, not later than 1800? If you do, would you please share the info with me? EDWARD ELSEY was perhaps among the first, if not the first, white settler to take up permanent residence in the eastern part of Randolph or southern part of Pendleton County, VA(WV) somewhere on Allegheny Ridge. The only trace we have for his wife "Sally" or Sarah is an entry in a family bible that names her as the mother of Edward's son, THOMPSON ELZA (ELSEY) who was a prominent early pioneer settler in the Dry Fork Watershed of the great Cheat River. From the Am. Rev. War pension application papers of THOMAS ELSEY (born 1760, brother of EDWARD), we know that EDWARD's wife, "Sally" or Sarah Thompson, had two cousins named William Stricker (var. spellings) and Mary Ann Stricker (b. 1763). Mary Ann is known to have married THOMAS HUDNALL (b. 1760) and to have had a son named THOMPSON HUDNALL (B. AFTER 1800). Any information about these ancestral people would be very much appreciated. Anyone wishing to contact me privately may do so at: [email protected] Harvey

It does contain material that has nothing directly to do with the historyof Augusta County. For the first time since I started receiving these postings, I have seen a list administator who is trying to keep un-needed or wanted topics off the list, and is not trying to control how list members direct their reserach, or to prune the list members own opinions.
