    1. Old Map - Borden's Grant
    2. I have a copy of a map of Borden's Grant that appears inside the cover of the book, Wear & Weir Families: From Here and There and to the White House by Jones and Spore. The map is hand drawn and shows the original owners of the tracts and the year of purchase. Some are difficult / impossible to read, but I will try to respond to anyone who requests a "look up." I will be out of town until next Sunday, so I may not be able to respond immediately.

    2. I have ancestors who purchased land in Augusta in 1742. They came from Ireland, but I do not know when / where or how they arrived. The deeds for early Augusta land owners in Borden's Grant (aka Scotch-Irish Settlement) can be found in Orange County, VA deed books. The land was in Orange County prior to the formation of Augusta.

    2. My Valley Names are Frazier and Moody, also Gay. John Frazier married Isabella Moody in PA probably. Their children were born in VA and grew up there. John, Jr. married Jennett Gay and had some children. The oldest boy, Samuel took the family to Putnam County, WV by 1800. Isabella Moody's brothers James and Robert lived near the Fraziers on Cow Run. James had daughters, but Robert either didn't marry or had no children who lived to adulthood. Constance

    2. Yes, my ancestors were in the Valley pre-1744. They came into Virginia from Pennsylvania ca 1735 and perhaps earlier. We know that the first property purchased from Beverly was paid off by 1740. Children were baptized by 1736-1739 according to the Tinkling Spring records. These folks were Scots-Irish and if you're familiar with those folks, they just didn't fit into the political situation already established by the Germans, Lutherans, Quakers, etc up in PA. Being a noisy, opinionated lot, they established a nice settlement for themselves in the Valley, bringing their religious beliefs there (Tinkling Spring Church.). I don't know what boat they arrived on. Boy, I wish I did. All I have is information from a law suit that says the parents of James, Robert and Isabella Moody were from Pennsylvania. Apparently they lived near some Brownlees, as the Brownlees testified they had know the older Moodys in Pennsylvania. I think the migration was probably MD-PA-VA-WV, but they might have come straight into PA through Philly and then to VA. Constance

    3. While researching one of my McGlaughlin ancestors recently, I can across a Rev. War Pension Application in Bath County for John McGlaughlin where he stated he was born in Augusta County May 26, 1764. He later stated in the same application dated 1833 that part of Augusta was now Rockingham County. I have not been able to find his father. If anyone is researching this line and can give me a hint where to look next it would be greatly appreciated. He married Ann Wiley, daughter of Robert Wiley in 1790 in Augusta. I have their marriage bond, consent form and minister's return. No mention of who his father could have been. I have easy access to Augusta County courthouse. I have been to the Va. State Library and obtained his military records but still no mention of his father. Thank you in advance, Susie

In that county, they recorded changes in status in a remarks column, so owner is marked as deceased, property is marked as owned by heirs; the form of ownership is noted (in fee, dower, life), allowing you to deduce relationship and inheritance, notations about court cases affecting land &c. Many of these non-deed transfers show up. Even some of my "missing" deeds may be here (I am still sifting my collected data). In other words, an absolute gold mine, tedious but invaluable. The tax man was very thoro. I hope others are so lucky in other parts of Virginia.

    3. I believe that there is a possiblity that adeed might not be filed until the property is sold outside the family; i.e., if son inherits and then son inheritsk etc. It is always necessary to check deed indexes. And yes, I have heard of deeds filed in other places. If the grantee lived in another county, there might be a copy of the deed in his home county. I have one family that lived in Bath, Augusta and Botetourt and never moved. This was due to county border changes. You might want to keep an open mind & eye about where the land records are. I have been struggling with land records at the northern end of the valley, where Frederick, Berkeley, Jefferson Cos have a long term historical link. Not every deed record seems to be in the county you think it should be in by calendar. Also, there are deeds missing, and it appears that some of them might be filed in the circuit court (or whatever the wider-area court was called ca 1800-1820). I am not sure what the law was exactly about deeds, and there are probably some deeds that are just unrecorded or filed long after the actual transfer, but that I haven't yet seen, nor have I looked at the deeds filed in the higher level court yet. The process, from what I have seen of the court records, suggests that everything passed thru a court at some point, that during this early period there was no separate recorder's office with notarized deeds and simplified filing &c. The process is indistinguishable in those northern counties from other civil-like (chancery &c) cases.
