It's a great site, and I have added many more folks than my own relatives to the list. I think I'm over 100 now, but I haven't had the time to check it recently. Go! Go! Go! You probably have visited a cemetery that I haven't and vice versa. I can't encourage you all enough to get involved with findagrave.com adding all our relatives to its database. You just never know how knows exactly where that brick wall person you're looking for and you might find it on findagrave.com! Pat, Leah Wion at [email protected] is a descendant of Edward McMullin and Sarah Robinson through their son Edward. She is trying to get the needed information for First Families of Augusta on this couple. She is on her way to Florida for the winter so give her a week or so to get connected. I would assume that Oberbeck/Overpeck/Overpack are all various phoenetic spellings of the same name. I have the same Andreas Oberbeck (also called Orebaugh) in Bucks County, PA who married Elisabeth Drach. I have not been able to connect this family with my Augusta/Rockingham County family. I am descended from Andrew Orebaugh who m. Margaret Stolp (Stalp) in Augusta County. Margaret was the daughter of William & Elisabeth Stolp. I do not know the parentage or origin of Andrew. There was, also, an Adam Orebaugh in the area. I would assume that he was related to Andrew but I do not know his origins either. There is a book in publication which names my Andrew as a grandson of Andreas but that book is incorrect. It confuses the Augusta County Andrew with another Andrew of Bucks Co., PA. > I am new to this list. We have just found a possible connection to Augusta County and are researching it. We research MOSES THOMPSON/THOMSON who is listed in Chalkleys as being in Augusta County by 1739 and having a wife named Jane. He bought property on the Beverly Manor. Is anyone researching this family? We are supposedly descended from him through our Neil Thompson who we are told was born in Augusta County about 1772. We are trying to document this but the Will of Moses Thompson listed in Chalkleys from 1778 does not list any children by name but a daughter Catherine. Neil was in Gallatin County, Illinois by 1814. Can anyone here help? Jan McCabe Hall Thompson, Boaz, Ozee, Stephenson, Alphin, Pogue, Ferrell, McCabe, Smith, Knapp, Evans, etc etc etc > >
Long shot, no need to reply. Elizabeth Walker, d/o Alexander of Augusta Co., VA, married James Ware in the late 1700s. Would you have any info on this couple? Thanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, October 13, 2004 8:27 PM Subject: Re: [VAAUGUST] Early Augusta Migration My Augusta / Rockbridge surnames: Culton (confirmed); Willson / Wilson and Weir / Wear (strongly suspected, not documented). Can anyone help me out with the meaning of assignee in this deed. Trying to figure out if this was a bounty type land deal from Virginia militia duty. I don't think there was any bounty land for Revolution War service this early. Greenbrier County, Virginia January 1, 1778 John Beard is entitled to 400 acres as assignee of William Gilhison and John Callison to include a survey made for Callison in 1774 adjacent to William and John Callison Were William and John Callison/Gilhison entitled to this land and they assigned their portion to John Beard or just what is happening. Thanks for any help Take care Marilyn

I just returned from vacation and while going through my accumulated email, saw a lot of activity on the Augusta County mailing list regarding First Families. I have a Jones family in Augusta County as early as 1775. They were Valentine Jones, my 4th great grandfather, his brother Berryman Jones, and John Jones, who I believe was their father. If anyone has any information about these men or this family, please contact me. I've hit a very solid brick wall. Thanks! Kathy Jones-Kristof
Not sure that it helps, but I have seen the surname ERSKINE misspelled to be Askin/Askins in records from Monroe and Greenbrier Counties (derived from Augusta). I am an Erskine descendant, but the names you mentioned aren't familiar. GOOD LUCK! ~Tracy -- Looking for nourishing and moisturizing handmade soaps? Andrew WALLIS/WALLACE. He married Margaret CALBREATH in 1796 in Augusta County, Virginia. ANDREW and MARGARET were present in Augusta, VA for the settlement of Margaret's father's estate, Thomas CALBREATH(also spelled COLDBREATH, AND GALBRAITH ), in 1801. Nothing is known of them until the 1820 census of Smith County, Tennessee where Margaret/Peggy appears as the head of household suggesting Andrew was deceased prior to 1820. I know nothing about Andrew prior to his marriage but Margaret was the daughter of Thomas and Margaret CALBREATH. Margaret was the daughter of William Johnston who plots 269 & 270 in the Beverly Patent dated 1749. William JOHNSTON and his wife Ann SMITH . William JOHNSTON along with Ann, Elizabeth and John Johnston proved their importation in Orange County, Virginia on 24 July, 1740. Howard M. Wilson wrote that The Johnston's though of Scottish descent, came from Ireland to New Hampshire. Any help on the WALLACE line would be appreciated. James Wm. Wallace
