    2. You might start searching for your August/Rockbridge ancestors by accessing Chalkley's CHRONICLES OF THE SCOTCH-IRISH SETTLEMENT IN VIRGINIA. it is online. Another source would be the Rockbridge County Historical society. Good luck

    1. Caleb Burton,1760
    2. I'm looking for information on Caleb Burton. He was the grandson of John Burton of Cobbs, Chesterfield Co. He was in Augusta Co. in 1757 and in the Albemarle Militia in 1758. He probably lived right along the border of these two counties. My g-g-grandfather was also named John Burton and lived in both Augusta and Rockingham Counties in the 1830-1850s. I'm wondering if I am related to Caleb. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Karen

    3. Thank you Eleanor for your suggestion concerning the map. I will try the U.S. Forest Service. I'm not sure if they would carry archival information; but one never knows :-) I have followed other leads and came up with a great early street map of Staunton's Historic District, but not the surrounding area that is in question for me. This map I think should be on the Augusta site on USGenWeb. I'm am going to contact them. There are a couple of significant changes in street names that would help people out with deeds for lots within the city itself. For instance, today Johnson Street goes straight across to Kalorama St. In early Staunton going east to west from Kalorama St. it was Greenville Ave., then Court House St., then Spring Lane, and then Johnson St. And Central Ave today was previously named Water St. Still have not found the exact location of Port Republic Road that was about 2+ miles east of Staunton near Lewis Creek and no longer exists today :-( One day though that will be solved too :-) Thanks again. 2. I WAS GOING THRU MY MAIL AND FOUND THIS UNANSWERED MEMO ... WHATS YOUR CONNECTION TO AUGUSTA COUNTY VIRGINIA? I JUST WONDERED ... I AM FROM A LINE THAT EXTENDS FROM ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, BUT IT'S IN THE NORTHWEST CORNER NEXT TO AUGUSTA COUNTY. HOWEVER, THE "ROBERTSON" NAME INDICATES SCOTLAND AND I WAS WONDERING IF YOU'VE GOT ANY CONNECTION EITHER TO THAT COUNTRY OR TO THE REID-REED LINE. JAMES E. REID HEALDSBURG, CALIF.

Fairfax claimed and sold land that was eventually proven to belong to Hite. Hite got no money for the land belonging to him, that Lord Fairfax sold. The lawsuit was finally settled in Hite's favor. But by that time everyone concerned was dead and no one got anything, except possibly the lawyers! 3. Mickey, There was a Adam and there was a Hugh Caperton the sons of John Caperton and Polly Thompson. You have Hugh Adam Caperton, I guess we are talking about the same people. So if we are talking about the same family then Hugh was born ca 1751 and in Augusta Co, Va. Adam was born ca 1753 Augusta Co, Va. I don't know which Thompson line is connected to this Caperton line. I have two Thompson lines from Augusta County. Adam did die in 1782 at Estill's Station in Madison Co, Ky. Adam is on list of tithables in the Botetourt Co, Va records in 1773 and did marry Elizabeth Miller. He was appointed deputy sheriff Greenbrier County Nov 1780. I find no evidence that they were in N.C., I have all children born in Va. At the dates you gave for children's birth they are still in Va and go to Ky. Where did you get the source they were in N.C.? I would need to research this data where I could also place them in N.C., but I haven't found that information. Would love to share. Gay Nix

Michael Wrote in part: >>> Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not aware of any part of >>> Rockingham Co. going back under Augusta Co. after R'ham's formation in 1778.<<< Note: The lines of Augusta, Rockingham and Frederick Counties had some changes made when the final survey of the Fairfax claims were made. As I understand it, the Fairfax claims took a considerable portion of Frederick County and some land was taken from Augusta to make up for that loss. This also affected Rockingham County. I can't explain exactly what was gained or lost but possibly someone has the details available. Joist Hite and some others were denied parts of their previous grants by Fairfax which caused some land purchasers to lose title to their lands. Joist Hite spent a great part of his later life trying to clear titles to land he had owned and sold to others. G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va.
