Dear Georgia, I, myself, cannot find anything on our Robertson/Roberson/Robinson line before John in White County, TN. in the mid-1800s. I am going on the research of others that our John was descended from John Robertson and before that William Robeson and Mary Colwell of Augusta Co. VA, who was descended from Andrew of Scotland and VA. This seems to fit because of the migration of the Robertson/Roberson/Robinson brothers to Northwest Arkansas in and around the time of the Civil War, when we can zero in on family accounts in their own words.
Hi: I have a Robert Robertson, but he was born 1765, died about 1834. I don't have any Sarah Jane Lines at all. Thanks for writing. Pls forgive the x posting. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! A Feast of Ancestors! Enjoy Free Access to the Register Online Over Thanksgiving Weekend! NEHGS is pleased to offer free access to its New England Historical and Genealogical Register database on New England Ancestors.org over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend! Normally only available to NEHGS members, the Register database will be accessible to everyone from Thursday, November 25 through Sunday, November 28, 2004. We encourage all NEHGS members to spread the word about this offering, and we hope that those of you who are not members find a veritable feast of ancestors in the Register database! Published quarterly since 1847, The New England Historical and Genealogical Register is the flagship journal of American genealogy and the oldest journal in the field. The online database includes issues from 1847 to 1994. The Register has featured articles on a wide variety of topics since its inception, including vital records, church records, tax records, land and probate records, cemetery transcriptions, obituaries, and historical essays. Authoritative compiled genealogies have been the centerpiece of the Register for more than 150 years. Thousands of New England families have been treated in the pages of the journal and many more are referenced in incidental ways throughout. The articles in the Register range from short pieces correcting errors in print or solving unusual problems to larger treatments that reveal family origins or present multiple generations of a family. Look for details on how to obtain free access to the Register in a special eNews bulletin to be sent out Wednesday, November 24. A link will also be available on that date on the home page of our website, www.NewEnglandAncestors.org
Thanks to those of you who haver responded to my note. James & Ann (Garner) did have a son named Joseph and one named Thomas. Neither of these two have had any line developed to my knowledge. It is possible that they are the "two younger brothers who died young" according to a family member interviewed in a Jackson Co OH newspaper. Many people assume they never married. BUT, there has never been any proof for that as far as I have learned. I found a marriage for a Joseph Stevenson/Stephenson & .Susanna McClure in Rockbridge Co VA in 1796. I've tried to find this Susanna McClure line and have not succeeded. Rockbridge was cut out of Augusta Co in 1794 and James & his son Robert were counted in Rockbridge in List of Tithables in Rockbridge in 1778 along with two Josephs.. I also found a marriage in Jackson Co OH in 1818 for a Joseph Stephenson to Elizabeth Bowen. All the other Stephenson/Stevenson marriages at that timespan in Jakson Co are either children or grandchildren for James and Ann. Therefore, there is a possiblilty that the son named Joseph did in fact live and marry in Rockbridge in 1796 and perhaps remarried in 1818 in Jackson Co OH. Since my Joseph was born 1810/1811 in VA, he could fit here. My Joseph Stephenson named his first son James/Joseph. Perhaps this would be a clue as to his father's name. Darn those Scotch-Irish, they all use the same given names to their children! Thanks again for the response, Nancy Stephenson Guenther

Does anyone know who the parents are of this Fleming Carroll, born 1806 that has been posted on this site? Have an ancestor of mine named Agnes Peery -Gibson, that married Charles Carroll (b 1764) thought he may be related, this family later went into Washington Co. VA and Russell Co. VA. Thanks, Karen

Another creek - unable to decipher the name - runs across the Western portion of Joseph Culton's land. Any small "branch" off either of these creeks might be labeled Culton's Branch. Thanks, Larry! You present an excellent theory. And I see exactly the features you mention on my copy of J. R. Hildebrand's excellent map of the Borden Grant. Robert and William Brown got adjoining grants on Culton's Branch on 1 June 1741. Trouble is, these grants don't show up on the Borden Grant map -- making it seem they were in another area. (Also, I don't find them on Hildebrand's map of the Beverly Patent.) Another problem is that the Culton brothers' grants are shown on the map as having been made in 1742. One wonders how the waterway in question would have been named for the Cultons at least a year earlier than their land ownership was formalized. Are you related to the Cultons? I am descended from one of these brothers - probably Robert It wouldn't surprise me to learn I'm related, but so far I haven't found the evidence. My reason for seeking info on Culton's Branch is that I want to sort out the several Brown families of early Augusta, about whom I know precious little at this stage, and my first step is to try locating them geographically. Additional thoughts always appreciated! Best regards, Jim Brown Arlington VA

Does anyone know the exact location of Culton's Branch, a stream that is referenced in several land documents from colonial Augusta County? It's obvious that the name of this waterway has changed since colonial days, because it is not listed in modern sources like the USGS database or DeLorme's "Virginia Atlas and Gazetteer." Nancy I have a genealogy cousin, Carolyn, who has a STEVENSON line in Augusta Co., VA. We are working on HARMANs together so I only know a little about her STEVENSON line. She just had surgery yesterday and will be out of the loop for a few weeks. I am sure when she recovers she will be happy to correspond. William STEVENSON - lived in Westminster, Frederick, MD m. Ruth LAMB (1800 census shows 6 sons - I know two) 1. Levi Lamb STEVENSON b.c. 1787 MD d. 1873 Staunton m. Elizabeth DUNLAP in 1815 Augusta Co., VA 2. Joel STEVENSON b. Mar 1798 d. 1854 AL m. Elizabeth SCHOPPERT There is a book that covers this line through Joel to some extent: "Lauderdale County, Mississippi four families, 1835-1936: McLaurin, Simmons, Stevenson, and Smith" by William Shepherd Smith; 2002 w/ index This may have nothing to do with your Joseph but it is another avenue to pursue :-) Good luck Linda B. Nancy, the Stephenson file that I have for James and Ann Garner has a Joseph but he is too old for your Joseph. Guess your Joseph would be of the next generation IF he descends from this James. The only thing I can tell you is that James and David, sons of James, did NOT have a son named Joseph. My almost 20 year search for the origin, parents and sibs of Joseph Stephenson (my GG grandfather) has been fruitless. Here's what I know: Joseph Stephenson marr Delilah Frey in Logan Co OH 12 Feb 1833. They had 10 children there and moved on to Starke Co, Marshall Co and then Jasper Co (all in northern IN ) by 1854. On the census records Joseph is listed as born in VA and the year would be 1810/1811. A big handicap for me is that there were 3 ofher Stephenson/Stevenson lines in Logan Co at the same time as my Joseph. The three lines are: 1. John Stevenson & Martha Warwick line to Hardin Co OH (was part of Logan just about this time) 2 James "of Monroe Co and Bath Co VA" Stephenson line and wife Anne Gardner/Garner 3.John Stephenson & Mary McCowan line from Washington Co PA whose son Rev Joseph Stevenson came to Logan Co in 1825 The John & Martha (Warwick) line and the James "of Monroe" and Anne Garner line both were in Augusta Co at one time. Any suggestions or help wull be greatly appreciated, I am most willing to share. In my frustration, I have started a third file called "Other Stephensons" and I have over 3000 names in that file alone. Nancy Stephenson Guenther

In an earlier message, I stated that I had reviewed microfilm records of the Tinkling Springs Church. I was mistaken, the records I reviewed were from the New Providence Church - which was very near Tinkling Springs. The time period of the records is 1819 - 1849. The title of the microfilm record is "Session Book of the New Providence Church, April 1819-1849." The microfilm is available from the Union Theological Seminary, Richmond. (804) 335-9913. They may also have records from Tinkling Springs. It is worth a phone call to find out. The microfilm can be ordered on interlibrary loan from your local library - usually about $5 to cover cost of shipping.
