Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BAC.2ACE/1421 Message Board Post: My mom's last sister, Aunt Laura, worked at the "colony" for a couple of years. I also had a cousin, daughter of my Uncle Walker who was a resident for many years. I talked to Aunt Laura's daughter this morning but she remembers very little about it. I also talked to the sister of the resident who visited the "colony" and her sister on a regular basis. It was by this time and still is called a "training center". I was a kid and was told that my cousin was retarded. She certainly had that appearance but was very helpful to both the staff and other residents of the colony. I remember Aunt Laura talking about visiting with her every day. I didn't realize until a few years ago that Josephine was not retarded but was very pretty and quite active until she developed POLIO at an early age which left her crippled on one side. It was the SURGERY which they talked her parents into that caused the epilepsy which caused her later condition . I do have pictures of her as a normal child ! and then as a retarded adult when she visited us. During her father's lifetime, she stayed at home but once he was gone, she was committed to the "colony" where she was a resident for many years. She was , in old age, forced out of the colony into a local nursing home where she lived on to age 65. I looked at the history recommended by a correspondent of your site and also consulted the cemetary site but did not call the police department recommended because Josephine did not die there and would not be a part of that anyhow. If I can be of some lmited help to anybody I'll be glad to help. Alice Lawhorne Lilley [email protected]
