Carolyn: No help on Genealogy for Gilberts of Amherst but can tell you I have a cousin 'Gilbert' now living in Amherst County but quite ill. Also remember as a child his father and his grandmother living there also. That was abt 1940's. If I can find anything else will send it to you. Hope this helps a little.
