I am a member of the McElroy family in Rockbridge and we hold a reunion each year. A branch of our family desends as well from the John E. Wills family. According to information that was submitted by this family (Fred Lewis and Betty Mitchell Crist Wills) for our August McElroy family newsletter, John was born on May 10, 1826 in Albemarle County, VA. He was the son of Elias J. and Emily Burbank Wills who were married on August 1, 1825. John married Matilda A. Norvell, the daughter of Braxton and Mildred Norvell, on July 31, 1856 in Amherst County, VA. John enlisted in the Confederate Army at Elon, VA on June 29, 1861. He was a corporal in the 51st VA Infantry, Company G. He died in 1912 and is buried in Elon, VA on property that was owned by the Wills family at that time.
