However I think there have been a few clerks since Amherst has been around since 1761*. Clerks should have started after we became independent. I generated a list of clerks who served in Hampshire County, West Virginia, 1754-2004 to publish in their 250-year history. It came not only from the clerk's signatures in the Court records, but other sources such as census records, county and family histories, and from the living clerks themselves. Without the latter sources, I would have missed several names who were short-lived. This is important for someone to do for every County. Wilmer L.
