The Dr. John Thompson Chapter # 466, United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) was originally chartered in Amherst County, VA on 13 May 1901. The Charter Members were: Mrs. Carrie Pettyjohn Miss Enis (?) Randolph Miss Kate Randolph Mrs. H. E. Joyner Mrs. T. L. Allen Miss Mary G. Allen Miss Eliza M. Payne Mrs. John M. Payne Mrs. Otto Lewis Eraus Mrs. F. F. Voorheis Miss Margaret P. Voorheis Mrs. Arthur Gray Lucile Garland Strode Edith Garland Strode Mrs. C. L. Scott Miss Zell Davies Miss Emmie (?) Davies I am reading from original signatures on the original Charter, so the spelling may not be correct. I have transcribed the names to the best of my ability. Among the many wonderful projects these Ladies took part in; they marked Confederate Soldiers graves with Government Markers & Iron Crosses to signify their service in the War Between the States (WBTS), and in 1922 they installed the Confederate monument in front of the old Court House in Amherst. The monument reads, "To memory of the sons of Amherst County who from 1861 to 1865 upheld in arms the cause of Virginia and the South, who fell in battle or died from wounds, and survivors from the war who as long as they lived were ever proud that they had done their part in the noble cause. " Unfortunately, this Chapter disbanded on the 08 Sep 1928. On 10 Oct 2008, Brenda Beeton & I received official permission to try and re-charter the Dr. John Thompson Chapter # 466, UDC. Ann King will be joining us in our effort. In order for us to receive the Charter, we must find 7 new Members to document their Confederate lineage and join our honorable organization. Please help us bring the UDC back to Amherst County. If you are interested in becoming a Member of this prospective Amherst County UDC Chapter or if you have any questions, please contact me. Anyone who can fulfill the Membership requirements before we submit our completed Application for Charter, will be know as a Charter Member and your name will go down in History, just as the Ladies names mentioned above have. I also have some questions that I am hoping the List can help me with... Does anyone have any information on Dr. John Thompson of Amherst County? It was the usual practice to name the UDC Chapters after prominent local personalities who fought for the Confederacy in the WBTS. It was also common for Family Members to join together and form a Chapter in the Memory of a Family Member who served honorably in the WBTS. Contact me if you can shed any light on the identity of Dr. John Thompson, and especially if you can provide a photograph. I am also very interested in information on the original Charter Members. If you can share any information on or photos of these ladies, please contact me. If you are a Descendant of one of these Ladies, I hope that you will carry on the tradition and consider joining our UDC Chapter. Thank you for taking the time to read such a long posting. I look forward to hearing from List Members. Sincerely, Laurie Goodman Lenz **************Get the Moviefone Toolbar.
