I don't know if it will answer all of your questions, but there is a wonderful article in this month's issue of Lynch's Ferry (the Official Publication of the Lynchburg Historical Foundation) written by Joe Stinnett called, New Glasgow: The Rise and Fall of an Antebellum Virginia Village. It has a lot of information on Samuel Meredith and his Family. As a matter of fact, the whole Magazine is about New Glasgow / Clifford in Amherst County.
