Amherst Bk. 4:8): "Whereas doubts have arisen relative to the legitimacy of my Children herein Named from my having intermarried with my Present Wife, who was a Sister of my first wife, now Dec'd. I think Proper here to observe that I (k)now recognize every Heir of the Body of the Woman with whom I now and Have for forty years lived, the Names of whom are all inserted in this my Will and Called my Sons and Daughters. It is my Will and desire 'that they should receive the respective portions which I have devised to them As the Heirs of my body it being only that which I have acquired from an honest and frugal Industry." In all, Stephen disposed of 39 slaves by this will and referred to previous bequests to his daughters. The results of his "honest and frugal industry" must have been considerable, for the bond for administration of his estate amounted to (English pound sign) 18,000. Sureties were: Robert Rives, Nelson Anderson. James Murphy and Steven Watts. Execs named were: sons Samuel, Terisha and John. Witnesses who proved the will were: Robert Rives, Jesse Higginbotham and John Johnson. Stephen Turner's widow, Sarah, who lived for 26 years after his death, made her home for some time with John and Sally Stevens in Nelson Co., where her will. dated 23 Feb. 1825 was proved 30 Nov. 1827.
