There were two MILSTEAD families in Amherst, both headed by Joseph. The first Joseph perhaps never lived in Amherst Co. himself. Where he died would be helpful. His widow was Elizabeth. She and four children are found in Amherst 1790s and early 1800s. Son Peter ended up in Warren County, TN. A definitive list of his sons would be helpful. The second Joseph arrived in Amherst before 1770 and died 1803 with "his only wife" named Rebecca. Their youngest son was named Joseph -- he was born about 1781 in Amherst and was still there when the 1820 census. He is often confused with the "first" Joseph Milstead. They are not the same. A definitive list of children from son Zealous Milstead (who died 1836 Lincoln Co. TN) would be helpful. I'm not sure which of the two families is more likely mine. BROWNs are confusing. Has anyone figured them out? Where were they before Amherst? I think the Pedlar River group is mine, but am not totally sure of that. SCHOOLFIELD William is somehow related to the second Joseph Milstead or his wife Rebecca -- based on wording of a deed. How? Thanks for any assistance on these names.
