1734 Oct 3 Goochland Co. Va. William Matlock 190 acre new land on N. Side of James River W. side of Little Byrd Creek adj. Joseph Ballenger, Arthur Hopkins and Robert Horsely. Cavaliers and Pioneers by Hudgins Vol. F pg 70 Joseph Ballenger RESEARCH NOTE: Joseph Ballinger is from New Jersey: Joseph Ballinger is one of Nancy B's ancestorial Grandparents. Nancy does have a travel line on them and http://www.ba044ancestory.com/MatlockMedlock/WilliamMatlockSonofJohnl<http://www.ba044ancestory.com/MatlockMedlock/WilliamMatlockSonofJohnl>. Arthur Hopkins 1744, Arthur Hopkins, Gentleman, was charged with the duty of listing the tithables on the north side of the James River from Ballenger's Creek to Lickinghole Creek. (the upper branches of Byrd Creek are a few miles east of Ballenger Creek in present day Fluvanna). Included in his list of some four hundred residents were the consecutive names of Jn Woodey, [torn] Bankes, Wm Martin and Jn Curby Robert Horsely his lands go into Albemarle County andthen into Amherst Co. VA land records are hard to place in context with modern place names, however, I do believe that some of the Byrd Creeks and Little Byrd Creeks are now called Ballenger's Creek and Little Ballenger's Creek, now in Fluvanna Co, and the one east of Scottville Albemarle I think used to be called Byrd Creek and is now (since at least 1778 or so,) is also called Ballenger's Creek (this is where his sons were) it empties into the James at Warren. I have the coordinates for TopoZone for them if you would like them. Although I just typed in Ballenger Creek on their search, and you can print out maps. I printed out overlapping ones so could get more detail. Following the Rivanna River down to the James also clarifies just what was meant by "the north fork of the James" i.e., the Rivanna River, and sometimes the north James. The main Ballenger Creek empties into the Rivanna just south of the town of Palmyra, and the smaller creek into the larger one to the east. These were called Byrd when he took up the land in 1729. Not sure if you knew this or not in locating your many Byrd Creek locations. You are so helpful in passing on your group's land records, not much I can seem to do in return. Did you decide if you wanted any lookups of the many Johnsons in Wood's Albemarle book? Just let me know and will allot time for that.
