    1. [VAAMHERS] Fwd: Smith Family Mystery
    2. Dave Duncan
    3. Good morning Amherst Co. researchers! I'm forwarding a message I sent out to the Nelson Co. list a few days ago to see if someone on this list might be able to help me. Samuel H. Duncan was the son of Fleming Hall Duncan and Sarah Johns and was born about 1818 in Amherst Co. After Fleming died in December, 1826, Peter Thornton became Samuel's guardian. Samuel was my ggg-grandfather. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you very much. Have a great day! Dave >>> Dave Duncan 8/16/2009 5:04 PM >>> I'm still looking for the family of my Elmira W. Smith who married Samuel H. Duncan on Dec. 21, 1837 in Nelson Co., Va. Her mother's name was Rebecca (maiden name unknown) and she lived with Samuel and Elmira for many years in Buckingham Co. Elmira's father is yet a mystery. William Smith is mentioned in Samuel and Elmira's marriage record and is thought to be the father but no marriage record has been found for a William Smith and a Rebecca. In the 1830 Census for Nelson Co., there is a Rebecca Smith listed with one male (age 10-15), one female (age 10-15), one female (age 20-30) and one female (age 30-40.) Rebecca most likely would be the female (age 30-40) and this would match later census records of Elmira's mother, which indicate that she was born about 1793 (making her about 37 in 1830.) Elmira was born about 1820 making her the one female (age 10-15.) I do not know who the one male (age 10-15) or one female (age 20-30) might be... most likely siblings of Elmira. Is anyone on this list familiar with this family or able to help me identify the William Smith listed on the marriage record of Samuel H. Duncan and Elmira W. Smith? Does anyone have any ideas about what Rebecca's maiden name might be? Can anyone tell me who the two unidentified individuals are that appear on the 1830 Census record with Rebecca and Elmira? Would appreciate very much any help or clue. Thank you! Dave Duncan Ohio
