My interest in Amherst County is through my BURK(s) line. I can trace John Burk(s) back to Amherst Co. leaving there in 1773 to settle in Wilkes Co. GA. He had 5 sons and 3 daughters when he left there, and a wife thought to be named Mary. They named one of their sons, James Lyon Burks, and we are presently trying to trace the Lyon line in connection to the Burks. John fought in the Rev War from Georgia and had a son Isham who fought in the Georgia militia as well. Family history says that this Burks line is part of the Samuel and Mary Davis Burks line but we are missing at least one to two generations linking to them. The name John Peartree, Opechancanough, Cleopatre are all part of the names that have survived through several generations of family historians. If anyone has information on these Burks I would appreciate hearing from them.
