According to the HEAD OF FAMILIES-VIRGINIA, 1783 - AMHERST COUNTY, there is a John BROWN with 10 whites and 2 blacks and a Adam BROWN with 4 whites and 1 black. Moses BROWN son of John BROWN m. Aug 3, 1780, Milley Milstead, daughter of Joseph Milstead & Rebecca. According to the 1999 Amherst Heritage Book, on June 21, 1781 two hundred and seventy nine non-commissioned officers and privates from Amherst County marched to join Major Gen. Lafayette. Among them were Andrew Brown, John Brown, Sr., John Brown, Jr., Morris Brown, and William Brown. Amherst was part of the Buckingham District which included Buckingham, Amherst, Albemarle and East Augusta Counties. It also included what is now Nelson County.
