    3. >From little booklet of papers in Amherst County Historical Museum- biographical sketches on Civil War vets and other Amherst men of importance, most still living at the time of the publication. James William Burch- son of Simeon A. and Louisa (Dempsey) Burch, was born in Amherst county, May 5, 1844. In this county, March 19, 1868, he was united in marriage with Martha J., daughter of Ambrose and Bettie A. Tomlin. She was born October 5, 1846, and died January 27, 1881, leaving him four children: Livingston V., born February 2, 1869; Malachi D, July 15, 1873; Maude Lillian, October 3, 1876; James M. B., August 24, 1878. In this county, April 16, 1882, Rhoda Burch became the wife of James W. Burch. She was born in Amherst county, August 14, 1854, a daughter of Fielding and Susan (Coleman) Burch. Her father was a soldier of the war between the States and still living in Amherst county. Her mother is deceased. The father of Mr. Burch was soldier of the 1812 war, and his father was a soldier in the Continental army in the war for Independence, and was with Washington at the surrender at Yorktown. James W. Burch combines the trade of blacksmith with the avocations of farm life, at Allwood, Amherst county, Virginia.
