To all Native American and those interested in Native American affairs. I am writing asking for your help on the behave of the eight state recognize tribes in Virginia. The Commonwealth of Virginia formally recognize the Chickahominy, Chickahominy Eastern Division, Mattaponi, Upper Mattaponi, Monacan, Nansemond, Pamunkey and Rappahannock. By the use of historical records, treaty documentation, and archaeological evidence, these tribes can trace their history back to before European contact in Jamestown Virginia in 1607. For those on the list, the Monacans were the Native American group living in what is now Amherst, Buckingham, Bedford, Campbell counties, when the English first arrived. That is why I have posted this request to the list. The Virginia Indian people need your help! The eight state recognized tribes of Virginia are currently in the process of seeking Historic Federal Recognition through Congress with a bill sponsored by Congressman James. P. Moran. We are asking for your support of this bill. THE THOMASINA E. JORDAN INDIAN TRIBES OF VIRGINIA FEDERAL RECOGNITION ACT OF 2000 has been introduced to Congress, the bill number is: H.R. 5073. I am asking you to please write a letter to the Chairman Congressman Don Young and to any of the other Congressmen or Congresswomen on the list that may be from your state.
