To the list: A MEMORANDUM of THE ELLIS FAMILY Prepared by Thomas H. Ellis, Richmond, Va., 1849 The following info is from this book which is in the Jones Memorial Library, Lynchburg, Va: John Ellis, of Tuckahoe in the county of Henrico, and State of Virginia. The tradition in the family, is that he was of Welsh descent. By a deposition, of record in the Clerk's Office of Henrico County Court, sworn to in Court, February 1st, 1691, it appears that he was born about the year 1661. It also states that his wife was Susanna. The sons of John Ellis were: 2, John; 3, William; 4, Thomas; 5, Henry; 6, James; 7, Joseph; 8, Charles. 8, Charles Ellis was born on Tuckahoe, in the county of Henrico, Virginia, in the year 1719 (or 1720); was married to, 55, Susanna Harding, by the Rev. William Stith, in the "hard winter" of 1739-40; and had issue: 56, Hannah, 57, Edith, 58, Susanna, 59, Josiah, t60, Mary Ann, 61, Charles, 62, Sarah, 63, Bethena, 64 Elizabeth, 65, Rosanna. Moved with his family to the county of Amherst, ( then Albemarle) about the year 1754, and settled the original seat of the Ellis family in that county, since known as "Red Hill", on the waters of Pedlar River. Died May 4th 1759, and was buried in the family burying ground at Red Hill. 55. Susanna Harding, the daughter of Thomas Harding and Mary, his wife, was born on Tuckahoe, in the county of Henrico, Virginia, in the year 1721 ( or1722). Married secondly, 93, John Beckley. Died, March, 1817, and was buried in the family furying ground at "Red Hill". 56. Hannah Ellis, was bornin Henrico county, Virginia, October 5, 1741; married 94, William Haynes, and had issue, 95, Charles, 96, Harding, 97, William, 98, John B., 99, Jesse, 100, Josiah, 101, Susanna, 102, Elizabeth, 103, Hannah.
