    1. [VAAMHERS-L] Memorial Day
    2. Memorial Day is a day off. It is a picnic with brats, dogs, burgers, potato salad, baked beans & a beverage of your choice. Memorial Day also signifies the opening of the pool season. But let's not forget what Memorial Day is all about. Let's remember those who fought & served in our armed services. Through genealogical research & the kindness of newfound cousins, I have found many examples of what Memorial Day is all about. This Memorial Day I will remember: * Jack Dempsey Peters, my father's first cousin, who perished in Korea. * William Peters, brother to my gg grandfather Jonathan Peters, who died from head wounds suffered during "Pickett's Charge" at Gettysburg. * Jordan Nichols Peters, my ggg grandfather, who fought in the War of 1812. * Zachariah Peters, brother of my gg grandfather Jonathan Peters, who lost a leg in the Civil War. * Sanford Gadd, brother-in-law of my gg grandfather Jonathan Peters, who died at the Battle of New Market during the Civil War. * My ggggg grandfathers Reuben Huffman & Frederick Lemon who fought for the 13 Colonies independence in the Revolutionary War. * My great uncle E. A. "Lash" Coleman who fought in WWII. * My great uncle Thermos Hinzman who was a POW in Hitler's Nazi Germany. * My great uncles Vernon, Lawrence, Jack & Guy Pritt -- brothers of my grandmother Mernia Pritt Coleman & all veterans of the WWII saga. * My father Shelby H. Peters, a Korean War veteran, who died while on active duty July 31, 1967. Please remember to place some flowers & flags on graves this weekend. Please remember to thank some veterans & please pass me another brat. Happy Memorial Day! Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com
