Family Story: my gg gf Dr. William Bartlett THOMPSON was a personal friend of Robert E. Lee ( don't know if that's when they were young men before the Civil War or during the war). Family said he didn't talk much about his home in VA or his dad or mom. ***He went to Portsmouth, VA some time in his life, and with another doctor cured the citizens of this town from some illness that a ship brought in to port. We don't know when this happened. The family has a cane and on top is gold and on the cane is written: TO Dr. WBT , thank you from the citizens of Portsmouth, VA. One of the wealthy merchants gave each doctor one of these canes. There was a fight over this cane before my g gf died and he gave it to one of his sons.
