He was a Confederate veteran and died in 1904 at Six Mile Bridge. He may have been the son of James and Frances Phelps of Amherst Co. If this is true, his other siblings would have been Charles, John, Joseph, Sarah Frances, Mahala, and Susan. James B. worked on the canal and in the 1850 census father James was listed as a lockkeeper. JamesB. married Amanda Elizabeth Doss of Appomattox Co. in Dec. 1865. Their daughter Emma Frances was my grandmother. Does anyone have any further information which might prove that this is the correct family grouping? Thank you so much for any help.
