Posted on: Amherst County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Amherst/651 Surname: Phelps ------------------------- I do not know if I am a descendent of William Phelps as I have searched for years to find the parents of my great grandfather, James Burks Phelps. I know that his family originally came from Buckingham Co., but he was living in Amherst Co. when he entered service in the Confederate Army. There were 2 other Phelps families that had sons named James about the same age in the 1850 censuses--1 in Amherst Co. and 1 in Campbell Co. They all seemed to use the same names over and over: James, John, Joseph, Frances, etc. I have not been able to prove which family James Burks belonged with. I do not have a birth date for him, but he died Nov. 28, 1904 at Six Mile Bridge. He married Amanda Elizabeth Doss in Appomattox Co. in Dec., 1865. If anyone can give me even a slight clue to his family, I would be so grateful. This has truly been a huge brick wall for me. Thanks. Yvonne
