Posted on: Amherst County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Amherst/585 Surname: McCLAIN, BAILEY ------------------------- Can anyone provide definite proof or documentation concerning the identity of the parents of two brothers, Henry McClain (1750-1843) and James W. McClain (1755-1813), who lived in Amherst County in the mid-1700's? Both were born in Lancaster County, PA and came to Amherst County as youngsters, presumably with their parents, and probably other siblings whose names are unknown. James W. McClain was married to Sarah BAILEY in Amherst County in 1787. A Witness was "Ufious" McClain. Perhaps she was James W. McClain's mother? Some researchers state that the father of these two brothers was Richard McCLAIN, but there are some doubts about this. There was also an older Henry McCLAIN in the records who lived in Amherst County at the same time who is a likely candidate. The name "Ufious" -- or "Euphias" as it later became spelled -- was handed down in both families for at least a few more generations, most recently in my great-grandmother, Charlotte Euphias McClain, born in Marion County, IA in 1850. Henry McClain b. 1750 and his unknown wife (some researchers say she was Esther Henderson) had at least 6 children: John, Margaret, Euphias, Esther, James, and William. James W. McClain and wife Sarah Bailey had 10-12 children, including: Mary, Richard W., Jonathan, James Jr., Phillip Bailey, Michael Smith, Euphias, Thomas D., Margaret, Solomon (possibly -- not proven), Henry or Samuel, and William D. Would like to explore this issue with other researchers. Nancy Shire sndshire@gateway.net
