Can anyone tell me if at any time Buena Vista, VA was in Amherst Co.? I understand it is now in Rockbridge County. On my mother's 1934 MD birth certificate my grandmother gave her "residence at birth" as "Buena Vista" in "Amhurst Co., VA". Was Amherst once spelled A M H U R S T? Or was it spelled incorrectly by whomever recorded the info. I wrote to VA's department with birth records inquiring upon my Grandmother's birth certificate dated 1911 and though they charged me $8 to look, they came up with nothing. Couldn't figure this out, when both her parents were born and raised in Amherst Co., VA and appear on every census report up until 1920. PamT
Even though they lived in Amherst Co., she could have been born in Rockbridge Co. as they are not far from each other. Good Evening Rockbridge County ws formed in 1778 fm Augusta which spun off fm Orange and Early Spotsylvania. Amherst came out of Albemarle, fm Goochland and earlier Henrico.
