Hi, FYI on Thurs. request about the song, "Old Joe Clark" & Old Dan Tucker. Thank you all for help. This is what I have learned so far. I have found nothing about Old Dan Tucker. However, I do have the Rockbridge Hertiage book. There is an article about the author of "Old Joe Clark" and how the song came to be. I expect it is one of those songs people constantly made up verses to go along with the situation and time. The article says the song was written by a Sam Downey, who lived in the area of Irish Creek. He had a family and made a living hauling timbers through out the mountains. He was illerate, but had musical abilities. The song "Old Joe Clark" was based on a real person. One John Pultz(1852-1921) romanced a woman named Betsy Brown. When the romance didn't work John retreated to Irish Creek where he met Sarah Clark(1860-1947), a daughter of Joe Clark,Jr, married her in March of 1878 and they had ten children. One of the sources of this story came from a book called "Fare Thee Well, Old Joe Clark, by Donna Huffer. There must be very few copies of this book around and I have yet to find a library that will loan it. In the Library of Virginia there is a genealogical chart of the Clark family. It is in the Native American resources. It begins with Joseph Clark, Sr., b. 1797 m.Polly Clark and his descendants. His son, Joseph Clark, Jr., and wife, Julia Sorrells appear to be the parents of Sarah Clark Pultz(John). Phyllis
