WHO ARE ALL THESE AMHERST COUNTY BENJAMIN HARTLESSES? And which one is which? Doesn't the book "Fare thee well ole Joe Clark(e)" name the Benjamin Hartless born in 1813 as the same that married Mary L. Burch in 1853 and then died in 1855? There IS a 28 year old Mary L. Hartless on the 1850 census report who lives with an ELDERLY Benjamin Hartless and has a 4(-6) year old "Leanna F." Would this be the FATHER of the Benjamin born in 1813? And Mary is residing with him while HER Benjamin is off somewhere else? Would then, her 4-6 year old daughter (who is listed AS a Hartless) be the daughter of HER Benjamin - the Benjamin she is not to marry for 3 more years? Mary Louisa Hartless collected pension on the military time of a Benjamin Hartless (her husband) from Amherst Co., VA and even willed this pension money to her youngest son, Henry C. Hartless in her 1899 will. But Henry C. Hartless was not born until AFTER the Benjamin born in 1813 was reported to have DIED and later, Mary Louisa began residing with Lindsey Hartless of Amherst Co., VA So confusing! PamT
