Sissy --------- Forwarded message ---------- From: RASANDIDGE@aol.com To: WILLS-L@rootsweb.com Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2001 11:05:09 EST Subject: My WILLS ancestors Message-ID: <64.c53aeab.27ee1fb5@aol.com> Hello, Do I have any "cousins" out there? Would like to hear from you. This is my WILLS line. Descendants of Emanuel Wills [ Due to the missing records, some destroyed by fire, others by wars, of a number of the VA Co., especially those of Warwick, King and Queen, Elizabeth City and Buckingham, it has not been possible to establish the parentage of James Wills, Sr. The large bible mentioned in his will may have contained this information, but if extant it has not been located to date. There is conclusive evidence to show that he was of the same family as Elias, Willis, *Lawrence, Edmund and Matthew Wills, brothers, and who were contemporaries of James. They originated in Warwick Co., VA. Records are recorded for Elias in King and Queen, Amelia, Albemarle and Fluvanna Co.; for Willis in Warwick, King and Queen and Fluvanna Co., VA; for Lawrence in Warwick, Prince George and Amelia; for Edmund in Amelia and Nottoway Co., and for Matthew in Prince George and Amelia Co's., Va. These men possessed considerable wealth, were prominent in their communities. ("William and Mary College Quarterly," Volume XXIV, # 3) gives the probable identity to Elias Wills' grandsire, quote: "Elias Wills died in 1805, a very old man. Elias Wills was doubtless a grandson of Elias Wills of Warwick County and Mary Condon, his wife." Elias and Willis were popular Wills names, being carried down in a number of the families of Warwick County origin, and this was also true in James' family. Origin of the family was England. Person by that name are found at an early date in County Cornwall; later, they are recorded in Devonshire, and Somersetshire. See page 221 __________ * Note: My attention has recently been called to the publication, "Colonial Families Of The Southern States of America," by Stella Pickett Hardy. this is an excellent reference book, and the author, in her first edition, has requested corrections; therefore, I take this opportunity to correct errors made on the Wills family of Warwick Co., VA Page 27, "5 --2. Mary , m. (first) John Tabb, Jr., (second) Matthew Willis, of Warwick Co., Va.; (third) Robert Armistead." Matthew Willis should read ---Matthew Wills. Page 128, "4--5 Emanuel Willis, " should read --- Emanuel Wills. End of quote and corrections. Lawrence Wills of the foregoing paragraph married a daughter of John and Mary (Armistead) Tabb, Jr. Being positive that errors will also be found in this work, "My Virginia Kin," regardless of the care that has been taken in copying the records, reading the galley proofs and checking the printed pages preparatory to the completion of the book , I too, shall be grateful to receive corrections to errors wherever found, regardless of how small. Blanche H. Baldridge 201 West Mission Street Strawberry Point, Iowa April 1959 _________________ page 221 A Wills Family Of Warwick and Fluvanna Counties, Virginia, and Texas Attention is called here to Elias, Willis, Lawrence and Matthew Wills, who are referred to in this work on page 89, (above). Willis Wills of Fluvanna County, Virginia, who left a will dated Sept. 14, 1782, probated Oct. 3, 1782 in the same county, mentioned his brothers, Elias Wills of Fluvanna County and Matthew Wills of Amelia County, Virginia. In his will he also mentioned his daughters, Elizabeth Wills and Rebecca, who married a Cole and a son, Elias. In a deed recorded in Amelia County, Willis stated that he was " of Warwick Co., VA." It is recorded in the ("Amelia Co., VA Deed Book 17," p. 212, yr. 1785) that Elias Wills of Fluvanna County, gave the use of a 200 acre tract of land on Namaseen (Nauwzeen) Creek to his loving brother, Edmund." Also mentioned Willis Wills as his brother in this deed. Edmund Wills, Sr. of Amelia County, later Nottoway County, left a will dated Oct. 17, 1796, probated Sept. 7, 1797 (Nottoway Co., VA Will Book 1789-1802") in which he mentioned his nephew, Edmund wills as one of his executors. He also mentioned his wife Elizabeth; dau's., - Mary Haynes Coleman, Mildred and Lucy; sons, - Matthews, Willis, Edmund, Laurence H., (his Mothers' maiden name was Laurence (Lawrence), Elias, William, John and Simon Wills, in his will. Lawrence Wills of Raleigh Parish, Amelia Co., VA left a will ("Will Book 3, " p. 318, yr. 1784) in which he mentioned his son, Edmund Wills as one of his executors. Year 1802 this Edmund was referred to as Majjor. William C. Wills, son of Edmund Wills, Sr. bro of Elias of Fluvanna, Etc., lift a will - (Nottoway Co, Va., Will Book 1," p. 282, 1789-1802) and had as one of his witnesses, Thomas T. Wills. Thos. T. Wills took the Matthew Wills Inventory (Amelia co., Sept. 27, 1798). Willis Wills settled the estate of Matthew Wills, ("Amelia Co., Va. Will Book 7," p. 308, 1807). Matthew died intestate 1798. Lawrence had a son, Thomas Tabb Wills. Lawrence's name appears on all major business transactions in Amelia County as a witness for these Wills' brothers. Lawrence also mentioned, in his will, his wife, Ann; daughters, Elizabeth Newman, Ann Moseby, Prudence Dupuy, and Lucy Wills; and son, William in addition to the tow sons, Edmund and Thos. Tabb Wills previoulsy mentioned. At a previous date the writer had some research made on this Wills family of Warwick County, Virginia. Matthew Wills of Mulberry Island, Warwick Co., b. ca. 1696, d. 1760 in Warwick Co., appeared, with the information at hand, to be the logical parent of these brothers, but this tentative placing of his relationship was erroneous as the foolowing references show. thier is conclusive evidence to show that James Wills (refer to page 89) had a family connection to this Wills family group. _______________ Elias Wills, of Fluvanna Co., VA was son of John Wills, who married Susanna Robinson and died year 1770. John was son of Elias Wills of Mulberry Island, (Warwick Co., now Warwick City), VA, who married Mary Condon, daughter of David Condon And Elizabeth Scarsbrook.
