I am researching the following families in 18th and early 19th century Amherst Co.: ISON, LYON, McALEXANDER, THURMOND, BURNETT. Mary C. Smith
I've hit a brick wall. My grandfather was Alfred Clark Thomas who married Lola Clarke Hackworth. Alfred's parents were Louis Nelson Thomas who married Cora Lee Chenault of Appomasttox Co. Parents of Louis Nelson Thomas were W. E. Thomas and Ellen Slocomb. The brick wall is here. My mother says that the Thomas line was from Tennesse but does not know where. My mother, Helen L. Taylor was born in Amherst Co., VA, the daughter of William Berkley and Nettie B. Williams Taylor and one of nine children.? We just lost the last two of her Taylor siblings in the past two months;?William B. Taylor, Jr. who ?lived in the Town of Amherst and?Nettie B. Taylor Harris who lived?in Allens Creek, Amherst Co.?? I have documented back to my (3) great grandfather, Thomas Taylor, living in Nelson Co, in 1820.? There were only two Taylor's in the 1810 Nelson Co. census and I feel they may have come from Amherst Co. since Nelson was formed in 1807 from Amherst Co.?(Benjamin Taylor (45+) was married with a family and the other Taylor was too young and living alone). Any suggestions? My Amherst roots can be traced back to Charles BIBB and Elizabeth GATEWOOD. They left Amherst and came to what is now Fayette County, WV and settled in a small community which to this day is called "Gatewood" after Elizabeth. Elizabeth and Charles raised a large family who included Sarah Bibb who married William Dabney Thurmond of the infamous 'Thurmond's Rangers' of Civil War fame, Martin Bibb, who was a famous preacher in these parts and my second great grandmotherz9paternal), Jeannette Bibb who married Marshall McClung of the Greenbrier McClungs. Another Bibb of Amherst, Levi married Lucy Clements and their daughter, Nancy married Wiliam Treadway making her my 2nd great grandmother (maternal). What I would like to know is, what is the relaionship between Charles and Levi and who were their parents? Thanks, Anita

Since AT is looking for research discussions, this might be a good time for a roll call of Amherst County, VA researchers. Now thru Thursday, just post a message to this list with "ROLL CALL" and the applicable surname(s) in the subject if you want other to know who you are researching. Please only list those surnames who were in Amherst County, VA at some points. Mentioning the maiden name of the individual or their spouse might help as well. My DEAVER line was in the part of Amherst County which is now Nelson County around the time of the Revolutionary War. They lived in the Roseland area, which I visited a couple of years ago. I did locate some land records for them at the Amherst County Museum and visited the approximate region where they lived. William Deaver, Sr (1719-abt 1805) was the father who had about 8 sons and one daughter, all born in MD. It is believe three of the sons served in the Revolutionary War. William Deaver, Jr. was recognized by SAR/DAR as a private in the Virginia Militia and is buried in MS. His brother Richard (1768-1820) was my ancestor, who was too young to serve at the time. William Sr was married to Susannah Birchfield. There were Birchfields living near the Deaver land in Amherst County, so I assume they likely migrated from MD together. William and Susannah were married 1754 in MD, though. I believe the family likely came to VA around 1770. (The Deaver line arrived in MD from Scotland in 1657.) William Sr does show up in the 1783 VA head of household census, but not the 1784 census. They moved about that time to western NC, where several of the sons were among the founders of Buncombe County in 1792 and Haywood County in 1804. My particular line went to TN and GA around the 1850s and here to TX around 1877. Looking forward to some interesting narratives. Joe D. Deaver VAAMHERS List Admin
