There were two MILSTEAD families in Amherst, both headed by Joseph. The first Joseph perhaps never lived in Amherst Co. himself. Where he died would be helpful. His widow was Elizabeth. She and four children are found in Amherst 1790s and early 1800s. Son Peter ended up in Warren County, TN. A definitive list of his sons would be helpful. The second Joseph arrived in Amherst before 1770 and died 1803 with "his only wife" named Rebecca. Their youngest son was named Joseph -- he was born about 1781 in Amherst and was still there when the 1820 census. He is often confused with the "first" Joseph Milstead. They are not the same. A definitive list of children from son Zealous Milstead (who died 1836 Lincoln Co. TN) would be helpful. I'm not sure which of the two families is more likely mine. BROWNs are confusing. Has anyone figured them out? Where were they before Amherst? I think the Pedlar River group is mine, but am not totally sure of that. SCHOOLFIELD William is somehow related to the second Joseph Milstead or his wife Rebecca -- based on wording of a deed. How? Thanks for any assistance on these names. I am starting to search for relatives in the MARTIN & MAYS(fathers side), DUNN, NUCHOLS, and NUCKLES (mothers side)line. I am pretty much bare minimum info just back to great grandparents. I am trying to find out the names of my grandfather's (HESTER DODD MARTIN) parents and siblings. I was told that they past way before my mother met my father so she does not recall their names. I figure if I can find their names I can start the search. I have not been to the court to research any info yet-any help would be appreciated. Krystal A. Each Johnson families have certain surnames that are moving in Known Travel Patterns with them, Example Ballengers are moving with Matlock families who are married into the Benjamin Johnson lines. William Johnson is moving with the Pace and Allied families of Middlesex Co. Va. The Sorrell families are moving with families associated with Michael Johnson died 1719 on Tuckahoe Creek Henrico Co. Va. Basically if you have a Brick wall research the Lands your Family lived on. Many of the Water ways in Nelson, Amherst, Albemarle trace back to Goochland Co. Amherst Bk. 4:8): "Whereas doubts have arisen relative to the legitimacy of my Children herein Named from my having intermarried with my Present Wife, who was a Sister of my first wife, now Dec'd. I think Proper here to observe that I (k)now recognize every Heir of the Body of the Woman with whom I now and Have for forty years lived, the Names of whom are all inserted in this my Will and Called my Sons and Daughters. It is my Will and desire 'that they should receive the respective portions which I have devised to them As the Heirs of my body it being only that which I have acquired from an honest and frugal Industry." In all, Stephen disposed of 39 slaves by this will and referred to previous bequests to his daughters. The results of his "honest and frugal industry" must have been considerable, for the bond for administration of his estate amounted to (English pound sign) 18,000. Sureties were: Robert Rives, Nelson Anderson. James Murphy and Steven Watts. Execs named were: sons Samuel, Terisha and John. Witnesses who proved the will were: Robert Rives, Jesse Higginbotham and John Johnson. During a part of this time Albemarle was a very large county, including most of what is now Fluvanna, Buckingham, Amherst and Nelson Counties. Most of the will and deed books are extant for this period. The court order books, however, are often a source of information about people who either lived in the county briefly or who never bought or sold land or made a will. Many of the records are warrants, promissory notes, store accounts, complaints, etc., especially involving merchants. There are a few chancery suits, grand jury presentments, depositions and ordinary licenses. There is also a list, presumably made in the early 1780's, listing what records remained, not "destroyed by the enemy". During most of the period covered by this, John Nicholas was Clerk of the Court, but had a number of deputies, such as Ben Harris, John Ware, John Fleming, Henry Fry and Joshua Fry. order from Iberian Publishing Company 548 Cedar Creek Drive Athens, Georgia 30605-3408 May 1987 ' The 1995 re-typeset edition includes a new index that covers all spellings and abbreviations of names as they appear in the text. file of Wm M.
